Job summary

KPJ Healthcare Berhad seeks a skilled Sonographer to perform comprehensive ultrasound examinations across abdomen, pelvis, obstetrics, breast, and vascular studies. The role involves image acquisition, labeling, and prompt reporting to radiologists, while educating patients and maintaining safety.

The Senior Sonographer will supervise junior staff, exercise independent judgement, optimize workflow, and uphold KPJ’s safety and infection control standards within the ultrasound unit.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Medical Imaging or equivalent; Advance Diploma in Medical Ultrasonography.
• Registered under Act 304 and Allied Health Professions Act 774.
• 1 year clinical ultrasound experience (Sonographer); 3–5 years for Senior Sonographer.

Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations per protocols.
• Produce and submit sonographic images with proper labeling and documentation.
• Educate and obtain patient history, ensure comfort and privacy during procedures.
• Identify abnormal findings and escalate to radiologist promptly.
• Operate, maintain and troubleshoot ultrasound equipment; escalate technical issues.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Sonographer performs high-quality diagnostic ultrasound examinations to support accurate clinical diagnosis and patient management. The role requires competency across multiple ultrasound specialties, adherence to safety and infection control standards, and effective communication with patients and healthcare professionals. The Senior Sonographer additionally exercises independent clinical judgement, supervises junior staff, ensures operational efficiency, and upholds advanced quality and safety standards in accordance with KPJ policies, Act 304, and BSRP 2010.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Main Responsibilities

• Perform a full range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations (abdomen, pelvis, obstetrics, small parts, breast, thyroid, vascular, musculoskeletal) according to approved protocols and physician requests, ensuring high diagnostic quality.
• Produce, evaluate, and submit sonographic images with accurate labelling, documentation, and prompt forwarding to radiologists for reporting.
• Prepare, assess, and educate patients by obtaining relevant history, explaining procedures, ensuring comfort and privacy, and providing safe patient handling throughout the examination.
• Identify abnormal or urgent findings and escalates promptly to the radiologist or consultant for immediate attention.
• Operate and maintain ultrasound equipment through daily checks, proper handling, minor troubleshooting, and timely escalation of technical issues to Biomedical Engineering or vendors.
• Ensure strict infection prevention and control for all ultrasound rooms, probes, gel warmers, and related patient-contact equipment.
• Plan and manage workflow and scheduling to ensure efficient patient movement, reduced waiting time, and smooth daily operations within the ultrasound unit.
• Document and charge ultrasound procedures accurately, including consumables used, ensuring completeness for both routine and on-call cases.
• Collaborate closely with healthcare professionals to ensure seamless, patient-centred care and safe clinical operations.
• Support and guide junior sonographers, radiographers, and students, ensuring proper technique, adherence to protocols, and professional conduct.
• Senior Sonographer to perform and supervise complex or specialised ultrasound cases, exercise independent clinical judgement, coordinate workload distribution, and mentor junior staff as part of senior responsibilities.

Other Duties and Responsibilities

Perform any other responsibilities as assigned by immediate superior or hospital management.

JOB REQUIREMENT

Education

Minimum a Diploma in Medical Imaging or equivalent with Advance Diploma in Medical Ultrasonography. Registered under Act 304 and Allied Health Professions Act 774.

Knowledge and Experiences

• Sonographer: Minimum 1 year clinical ultrasound experience.
• Senior Sonographer: Minimum 3–5 years experience with advanced competency in multiple specialties.
• Has completed clinical training; hands on practice during an accredited sonography program or externship.
• Demonstrates strong clinical knowledge in human anatomy and physiology, ultrasound physics, and pathology, enabling accurate differentiation of normal and abnormal anatomical structures during diagnostic imaging.
• Familiar with Medical terminology.
