Job description
Job Purpose:

The Senior Nurse Manager will be responsible for the effective management on all matters of the units / wards under her care, to ensure effective delivery of optimal clinical care and patient safety.

The incumbent is to ensure high standards, quality nursing care and treatment are given to all patients. She acts as an advisor to clinical and management team in matters related to nursing services. To perform as acting ADON in the absence of ADON.

Key responsibilities:
1.0 DAILY ROUTINE
  1. Oversees and conduct daily / regular patient and staff rounds to promote and maintain healthy customer satisfaction level and ensure patient comfort and safety requirements are all fulfilled.
  2. Oversees daily operations of the units / wards to ensure the nursing professional conducts are uphold, policies and procedures are guided and being followed.
  3. Ensure adherence to and practice infection control measures and procedures.
  4. Evaluate the quality and appropriateness of nursing care, including documentation.
  5. Ensure there is robust workplace safety and health culture within the team.
  6. To assess the needs of staff and consultants and to ensure that their individual requirements are met.
  7. To observe that codes of confidentiality and loyalty to patients, medical staff and colleagues are maintained.
  8. To ensure that correct procedures are strictly followed concerning the storage, control, administration and recording of drugs.
  9. To ensure that all patient documentation is accurately completed.
  10. To ensure that procedures with regard to infection control are understood and practiced by the teams.
  11. To control and coordinate the activities of nursing, technical and ancillary staff.
  12. To ensure that all required instruments and equipment are in good working order and the staff are familiar with their function.
  13. To ensure that immediate action is taken with regard to faulty or missing instruments anddefective equipment.
  14. To supervise nursing staff to ensure that care is carried out as directed and treatment is administered in accordance with medical staff instructions.
  15. To ensure patients and members of their families have been instructed in techniques and methods of home care after discharge.
2.0 ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. To assist in developing policies and procedures for the nursing staff and participate in the implementation of these policies, and to ensure staff are both aware and committed to them.
  2. To provide input during performance appraisals and counsel staff in a manner that nurtures strength, improve on identified weaknesses and promote professional development.
  3. Oversees the annual clinical competencies assessment for nurses and ensure the assessment are being carried out on a timely manner.
  4. Provide leadership in recruitment, selection, development and staff retention in partnership with nursing team.
  5. Provide opinion and ideas to nursing strategy and lead the operational implementation of those strategies within the team.
  6. To work with Nurse Managers / Assistant Nurse Managers in planning annual staffing and equipment budget.
  7. To prepare annual performance targets for the departments and to work within an agreed budget.
  8. To control the rosters, work lists and leave arrangements for the department teams, ensuring an even distribution of leave throughout the year.
  9. To organize all staff to meet the needs of the department making full use of flexi time and reporting particular staffing needs regularly to Nursing Administration.
  10. To maintain staff discipline and to carry out staff performance appraisals, together with the Nurse Managers / Assistant Nurse Managers
  11. To liaise with other Heads of Department and personnel to ensure that efficient and high standards of service are provided.
  12. To ensure all charges are entered and processed correctly.
  13. To keep Nursing Administration informed of significant changes or specific matters relating to staff and the departments.
  14. To attend/conduct meetings to discuss departments’ operation, staff training needs and to formulate programmes to improve these areas.
  15. To be a role model for effective and disciplined teamwork through good communication and delegation.
  16. To assist in the selection and appointment of staff.
3.0 NURSING RISK MANAGEMENT AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT
  1. Monitor and ensure quality improvement activities are met. Ensure timeliness in tackling clinical incidences, complaints and feedback that are reported.
  2. To provide clinical inputs on clinical areas in compliance with MOH guidelines.
  3. To be engaged in the department and hospital quality indicators.
  4. To ensure clinical compliances are met.
  5. To ensure Quality Improvement initiatives are met throughout the nursing units.
  6. To ensure the clinical incidences and complaints/feedback are reported and appropriate actions are taken.
  7. To develop annual departmental goals and objectives and monitor the outcomes.
  8. To assist in the preparation, documentation and implementation of accreditation initiatives.
  9. To actively involved in ward Root Cause Analysis and purpose intervention to prevent recurrence of incidents.
4.0 NURSING STAFF DEVELOPMENT
  1. To provide support and guidance to ensure an appropriately skilled nursing work force.
  2. To assist in developing departmental performance indicators and monitor outcomes to reflect the scope of service.
  3. Maintains a cooperative relationship among healthcare / nursing teams by communicating information, responding to requests; building rapport and participating in team problem solving methods.
  4. Act as a mentor, coach and counsellor to Nurse Managers / Assistant Nurse Managers.
  5. To participate in teaching and learning to enhance concepts of leadership among the nursing team.
  6. To monitor, support and motivate the staff and to train them in hospital policies, procedures and standards.
  7. To provide orientation for new staff in the units and to participate in training and education programme for staff.
  8. To promote a professional and conducive environment, ensuring that behaviour, appearance and attitudes are maintained at all times.
5.0 FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT
  1. To establish and maintain good order and cleanliness within the departments.
  2. To plan, request and maintain supplies, instruments and equipment within the budget.
  3. To monitor planned preventative maintenance and to ensure that accurate records are kept.
6.0 OTHERS
  1. To undertake any other duties as assigned by Immediate Superior and/or Management.
Qualification And Experience
  • Master /Degree / Diploma in Nursing and must be registered with the Malaysian Nursing Board.
  • Post Basic Specialty Certificate / Advanced Diploma in related area is preferred
  • Minimum 15 years’ nursing experience in a hospital or similar setting
  • Good interpersonal & communication skills.
  • Possess a valid Annual Practicing Certificate (APC) and BLS.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Must maintain confidentiality.
  • Able to work with all levels of staff.
  • Willing to be deployed.
