KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
  • Support the relevant Legal Manager in delivering legal services to Sarawak Energy Berhad’s group of companies (“SEB Group”), with a focus on banking and corporate finance matters (including project financing and capital markets), corporate advisory work, and transactional support.
  • Manage and ensure corporate compliance with statutory and legal requirements applicable to the SEB Group and report any non-compliances or breaches to the Legal Manager or higher.
  • Negotiate, draft, review, witness legal documents, and attend to the stamping of legal documentation required by the SEB Group.
  • Provide legal and operational advice as required, including in the areas of electricity business, procurement, HSSE, contract management, ICT, governance and regulatory, land and property matters, etc.
  • Manage assigned disputes across SEB Group functions or entities in a cost-effective manner and in the best interests of the Group.
  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with relevant government or statutory bodies, consumers, and other stakeholders to support compliance and business objectives.
  • Provide regular, comprehensive status reports to the Legal Manager or higher.
  • Supervise external advocates and solicitors in the management and resolution of legal matters.
  • Develop and manage the legal services budget in coordination with the assigned legal unit or team.
  • Contribute proactively to the development and enhancement of best practices, procedures, and governance standards within the Legal Division.
  • Work with managers to develop KPIs relevant to the Legal Division and its units.
  • Anticipate potential legal issues to support business partners in determining appropriate dispute-resolution strategies.
  • Advise and support the SEB Group’s local and international business activities on legal, commercial, and social matters.
  • Participate actively in commercial excellence, project delivery, operational excellence, and HSSE initiatives.
  • Review existing laws and ordinances and propose amendments, insertions, or deletions to the Ministry and/or State Cabinet in line with current political and geopolitical developments.
  • Drive and participate in digitalisation initiatives within the Legal Division, including leveraging technology for contract management and compliance monitoring.
CHALLENGES OF THE JOB
  • Proactively handling and managing legal disputes with opposing parties or their legal representatives before engaging external panel law firms.
  • Performing expeditiously and professionally in a dynamic legal environment, especially when laws and regulations are frequently updated.
  • Balancing the provision of sound legal advice with the need to support SEB’s strategic goals.
  • Navigating complex and evolving energy regulations while ensuring full compliance across all operations.
  • Adapting to emerging technologies, evolving political dynamics, and global economic shifts to support informed decision-making and resilient business strategies.
QUALIFICATION & WORK EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor of Laws with minimum 8-10 years of relevant working experience.
  • Admitted as an advocate of the High Court of Sabah and Sarawak / High Court of Malaya.
  • Candidates with less than 8 years of relevant experience may be considered if they possess considerable legal experience in corporate finance, banking, or capital markets, possibly for a more junior role.
