Job summary

A leading safety consultancy in Malaysia seeks a Safety and Health Officer to ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote safe working practices. The ideal candidate will have a bachelor’s degree in safety management and 3 to 5 years of experience in health and safety roles. Key responsibilities include conducting risk assessments, developing health and safety policies, providing training, and managing safety inspections. Professional certifications are a plus, and candidates must hold a valid First Aid and NTSP certificate.

Qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of experience in health and safety roles within industrial/construction or similar organizations.
  • Professional certifications like CSP or OHST are advantageous.
  • Compulsory to have a valid certificate for First Aid & NTSP.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct risk assessments and develop measures to mitigate risks.
  • Develop and implement health, safety, and environmental policies.
  • Provide training sessions on safety protocols.
  • Investigate accidents and recommend corrective actions.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans.
  • Facilitate communication regarding safety concerns.

Responsibilities of Safety and Health Officers

To assist employers in carrying out their legal responsibility, ensuring compliance and promoting safe working practices.

SHOs can provide advice to their employers so that the desire to protect workers from the dangers of construction work is achieved. SHOs should have specific knowledge in the following aspects:

  • OSH legislation.
  • provision of safe operating procedures.
  • monitoring the effectiveness of control measures.
  • encouraging employee involvement;
  • continuous improvement in ensuring sustainable compliance with OSH legislation
SHO Key Tasks
  • Risk Assessment and Management : Conduct risk assessments, identify potential hazards, and develop measures to mitigate risks.
  • Policy Development and Implementation: Develop, update, and implement health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
  • Training and Education: Provide training sessions to employees on safety protocols, emergency procedures, and proper use of safety equipment.
  • Incident Investigation: Investigate accidents, incidents, and near-misses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Safety Inspections: Conduct regular inspections of the workplace to identify and rectify safety hazards.
  • Emergency Response Planning: Develop and implement emergency response plans, including evacuation procedures and first aid.
  • Safety Communication: Facilitate communication between management and employees regarding safety concerns and initiatives.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Management: Ensure availability and proper use of PPE and conduct assessments to determine its effectiveness.
  • Environmental Management: Monitor and manage environmental aspects, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting sustainability.
  • Record Keeping: Maintain accurate records related to safety training, incidents, inspections, and other relevant data.
  • Ensure compliance to HSE Requirement for the contractors. SHO are compulsory to attend induction/ awareness course of WAH, Scaffolding and Lifting Supervisor conducted by TNB HSE.
SHO Requirements and Skills:
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in safety management, occupational health, or a related field.
  • Certifications: Professional certifications like Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Occupational Health and Safety Technologist (OHST) are advantageous.
  • Skills: Attention to detail, excellent communication skills, analytical skills, and ability to conduct training sessions.
  • Experience: 3 to 5 years of experience in health and safety roles within industrial/Construction/ Power Utility and/or similar organisations.
Mandatory Requirements:
  • At least 3 years’ experience as SHO in construction work OR 2 years’ experience as SSS in TNB projects + 1 year as SHO externally.
  • Compulsory to have a valid certificate for First Aid & NTSP.
