Doctors Hospital Cayman is seeking a Registered Midwife to provide high‑caliber midwifery and neonatal care. You will support mothers and families through conception, pregnancy, labor, delivery, and postnatal care with evidence‑based practices.

Responsibilities include preparing for labor, assisting births, assessing newborns, and educating families on newborn care, feeding and safe sleep. Ongoing professional development and teamwork are essential in this role.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Midwifery and Nursing with advanced qualifications.
  • 3–5 years Midwifery experience (recent or currently practicing).
  • Current BLS certification required by start date.
  • ACLS certificate preferred upon commencement, otherwise within one year.
  • PALS and NRP certifications preferred upon commencement, otherwise within one year.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Maintain high standards of Midwifery and Neonatal Nursing care within a safe environment, ensuring care is planned, assessed, implemented, and evaluated based on individual patient needs.
  • Support mothers and families throughout conception, pregnancy, labor (including complicated births), delivery, and postnatal care.
  • Prepare women for labor, assist with birthing, assess newborns (APGAR, weight, head circumference), and provide postpartum care including infant feeding and maternal self-care.
  • Teach and assist parents with newborn care, offering evidence-based guidance on skin care, infant feeding, and safe sleeping.
  • Counsel and educate patients on reproductive health, contraceptives, and family planning.
  • Administer medications per hospital policy and perform emergency interventions (e.g., CPR) as needed.
  • Organize and manage patient reception, transfer, discharge, and care of personal valuables.
  • Participate in patient mealtimes, support special dietary needs, and ensure visiting policies are followed.
  • Collaborate with physicians, surgeons, GPs, public health nurses, and multidisciplinary teams for holistic patient care.
Documentation, Confidentiality & Quality Standards
  • Maintain accurate, legible, timely, and professional documentation in all clinical and maternity records, including education topics and patient responses.
  • Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality are upheld at all times.
  • Reassess and document revised interventions and outcomes; evaluate patient understanding and compliance with instructions.
  • Identify, evaluate, and report on practice gaps or policy issues; contribute to hospital, regional, and national audits.
  • Support the development of care standards using structure, process, and outcome frameworks; adhere to departmental internal controls.
Professional Conduct & Compliance
  • Comply with hospital and nursing policies, the Cayman Islands Nursing and Midwifery Council Code of Conduct, and the Canadian Nurses Association Code of Ethics.
  • Demonstrate competence in clinical guidelines and hospital protocols; elevate incidents or concerns to the Clinical Coordinator and Chief Nurse with appropriate reporting.
  • Ensure delegation aligns with skill level and knowledge of staff members.
  • Uphold professional standards in appearance, punctuality, and attendance, following Doctors Hospital policies.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration within the interdisciplinary team.
Teamwork & Communication
  • Actively participate in perinatal/unit meetings and ward/hospital communication processes.
  • Liaise effectively with internal and community-based multidisciplinary teams.
  • Communicate clearly with Clinical Coordinator regarding incidents, concerns, or complaints.
  • Foster a collaborative environment by supporting interdisciplinary communication and teamwork.
  • Stay informed through staff meetings and internal communications (e.g., email, memos).
  • Remain flexible and assist in other departments within the midwifery scope as patient acuity demands.
Clinical Support & Operational Tasks
  • Maintain adequate stock levels and ensure efficient use of pay and non-pay resources.
  • Demonstrate strong time management skills and flexibility to meet operational needs.
  • Adhere to hospital policies on absence, tardiness, and dress code.
Education, Training & Development
  • Attend all required training, CME/CNE sessions, study days, and maintain a professional portfolio.
  • Act as a preceptor or supervisor for students and new staff; participate in staff inductions.
  • Contribute to training needs analysis, support continuous learning, and pursue ongoing professional development.
  • Participate in performance reviews with the Chief Nurse and take responsibility for personal learning.
  • Educate patients and families during care interactions; identify and explore relevant nursing research opportunities.
OTHER DUTIES
  • The employee, as part of his/her job description shall take part in the activities of any committee that he/she is assigned by his/her supervisor and is expected to attend all scheduled meetings. The employee further agrees to be an active participant in assigned activities related to Doctors Hospital attaining and maintaining Joint Commission International (JCI) Accreditation.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
  • Bachelor of Science in Midwifery (BScM) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN)/ with M.Sc. / P. Grad. Diploma in Midwifery
  • 3–5 years Midwifery Experience (Recent or currently practicing)
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) required by start date.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certificate preferred upon commencement, otherwise to be acquired within one (1) year.
  • Current certification in Pediatric Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (PALS) preferred upon commencement, otherwise to be acquired within one (1) year.
  • Current certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred upon commencement, otherwise to be acquired within one (1) year.
  • Experience in hospital setting and understanding of hospital operations is preferred.
ACCOUNTABILITY

The Registered Midwife is accountable to the Chief Nurse/ Clinical Coordinator. Secondary reporting will be to his/her designate.

Therefore, the post holder will be required to demonstrate flexibility as and when required by their manager.
