The Opportunity

The Subject Leader will have a lead role in supporting learning and teaching in their area of

responsibility. As an expert in their subject area, the Subject Leader should be able to demonstrate that he/she is an effective educator and leader who reflects on their own practice regularly to ensure they are providing their learners with the best provision possible.

As an effective coach, educator and leader, the Subject Leader is expected to have, or

demonstrate the capacity to develop, high levels of knowledge, competencies and attributes in areas deemed necessary for the position. These will be assessed through self-evaluation and line management evaluation.

Drama Subject Leaders will receive one hour a week release time to support specific actions related to their responsibilities and duties.

The Subject Leader is responsible:

- to the Vice Principal - Learning & Innovation

- for that specific Subject area

- is a member of the ‘Learning and Teaching’ leadership team

Responsibilities/duties:

It is the role of the Subject Leader to:

  • Maintain the subject handbook for their area of responsibility.
  • Share research-informed ideas and develop exemplar plans for the creation of innovative approaches to learning within his/her subject area.
  • Support teams with planning, delivery and review of their subject.
  • Participate in Student Learning Reflection meetings plus learning walks and support reflective practice in his/her subject.
  • Lead professional learning within his/her subject area.
  • Guide and support year leaders/PLT with resource maintenance for their subject.
  • Lead special projects relevant to their subject area.
  • Adhere to the school's policies and procedures.

This job description is subject to annual review.

All responsibility points are subject to review at the point of every contract renewal. Drama Subject Leaders will receive an additional one-hour release a week to support specific actions related to their responsibilities and duties. It is expected that Subject Leaders will use their own time for additional work.

  • Educational Qualification and Certification: A teaching degree or equivalent, preferably with a specialisation in the subject area they intend to lead. Valid teaching certification is crucial.
  • Teaching Experience: Demonstrated experience in teaching, especially at the primary level, with an in-depth understanding of the curriculum and pedagogical strategies specific to the subject.
  • Classroom Management: Expertise in managing diverse classroom environments and implementing strategies to engage students in learning actively.
  • Leadership Skills: Ability to inspire, motivate, and lead both staff and students. This includes being approachable, able to delegate, and capable of making informed decisions.
  • Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills are vital for liaising with staff, parents, and external bodies, as well as for effective teaching.
  • Professional Development: A commitment to continuous professional learning and the ability to lead and manage professional development initiatives for staff.
  • Advanced Degree: Holding an advanced degree in education or a related field can be advantageous, providing deeper subject knowledge and research skills.
  • Innovative Teaching Methods: Familiarity with and application of innovative teaching methodologies, including technology integration, to enhance learning experiences.
  • Team Building: Ability to foster a collaborative and supportive team environment among teaching staff within the subject area.
  • Change Management: Skills in managing and leading change, especially in adapting to curriculum changes or new educational technologies.
  • Project Management: Ability to manage projects, such as subject-related events or initiatives, effectively.
  • Budget Management: Experience in managing budgets related to resources, materials, and activities for the subject.
  • Curriculum Development: Experience in developing, implementing, and evaluating curriculum plans that meet the educational needs of students.
  • Data Analysis: Proficiency in using student performance data to guide instructional decisions and improve teaching and learning outcomes.
  • Parent and Community Engagement: Experience in engaging with parents and the community to support student learning and development.
