Organizational Responsibilities

Responsible for direct supervision and coordination of activities in the allocated department.

Responsible to keep the Matron informed of any incidences or reportable situations that need nursing administrative involvement.

Adhere to all Hospital Standard Operating Policies and Procedures (SOP).

Practice Nursing Standard and Code of Ethics.

Practice Policies and Procedures on Infection Control.

Participate in the activities of the Nursing Committees and other committees of the organization when required.

Liaison
  • Matron, Nurse Educator, Doctors/Consultants, Head of Departments, Infection Control Nurse, Quality and Compliance Team, and Nurse.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical
  • Provide direct nursing care to assigned patients and ongoing supervision to ensure that all patients received care that are individualized and holistic through the application of nursing process and team nursing.
  • Ensure proper nursing documentation in patients' files and that it is contemporaneous.
  • Cooperate and collaborate closely with all nursing staff, doctors, allied health personnel and support services to deliver optimal patient care.
  • Monitor the quality of care / service in designated unit and subsequently initiate action and implementation of the corrective measures.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of principles, methods and skills of performing high standard of nursing practices.
  • Follow consultants' ward round with the team leader and assist in procedures.
  • Conduct periodic nursing rounds on all patients in her unit to ensure patient-focused holistic care are given and to ascertain for other additional needs.
  • Monitor performance of staff to ensure nursing care of patients are carried accordingly and adhere to the vision, mission, philosophy and values of the hospital.
  • Participate in the health education of her patients and their families in the ward.
  • Participate in the teaching and supervision of student nurses in her unit both theoretical and practical.
  • Take responsibility to maintain hygiene and safety standards of the unit and is accountable for the delivery of safe nursing care to her patients at all times.
  • Investigate policy / procedure violations in the unit, take appropriate action regarding incidents and initiate the completion of incident reports.
Administrative
  • Organize staff leave plans and nursing rosters in the designated unit and ensure adequate coverage of staff in all shifts.
  • Maintain precise record of nursing staff sick leave, notes and reports significant trends in sick leave and prepares sick statistics as required.
  • Initiate own monthly unit meetings and submit minutes of these meetings to Matron.
  • Participate actively and fully committed in the activities of the Quality Assurance, Infection Control and Fire and Safety Programmes.
  • Participate in Nursing Management Meeting.
Staff Development
  • Ensure all staff in the unit know and understand their job descriptions.
  • Ensure staff compliance with established Nursing Policies and Procedures.
  • Provide clinical guidance and supervision of nursing personnel in activities directed toward maintaining standards of patient care, safety, infection control and professional behavior.
  • Guide the staff in solving complaints concerning patients, relatives and staff using the appropriate communication channels.
  • Participate in the proposal and training programmes for staff as required.
Equipment and Medical Supplies / Drugs
  • Check DDA drugs with off-going Nurse In-Charge and in-coming Nurse In-Charge.
  • Take responsibility in encouraging cost effectiveness amongst nursing staff regarding use of equipment and supplies in the unit.
  • Ensure there is adequate supply of the items required in the unit at all times.
  • Establish accurate and up‑to‑date inventories for medical supplies, drugs and equipment in the unit and are stored / kept in the proper places.
  • Revise and approve the requirement of the new stock items and recommend in agreement with the Head of Department the required medical equipment in the unit and forwards to the Matron.
  • Regular check on all equipment in the unit and maintenance service in being done regularly.
  • Operate / maintain specialised equipment assigned to the unit and provide assistance / guidance to new staff in their use.
Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the custody and registration of all schedule drugs used in OT, stock level of drugs and lotion used in the area under her control with co‑operation of the hospital Pharmacist.
  • Coordinate with Anaesthetist in the operation schedule and scheduled operations according to staffing.
  • Supervise maintenance of the operation register co‑operation with appropriate staff.
  • Participate as scrubbed nurse with surgical procedures when necessary.
  • Participate in regular meetings of Operating Department staff and Hospital Nursing Staff at the appropriate level.
  • Co‑ordinate the arrival and departure of patient and staff from Departments such as X‑Ray in co‑operation with medical and receptionist staff.
