The role supports the Centre's advanced capabilities, including linear accelerators (LINAC), PET-CT, cyclotron-based radioisotope production, theranostics, and related imaging and therapy technologies. The Medical Physicist will contribute to establishing and maintaining the highest standards of radiation safety, equipment performance, and clinical excellence in this newly established specialist cancer centre.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, optimise, and verify patient-specific radiotherapy treatment plans (including 3D-CRT, IMRT/VMAT, SRS/SBRT) in collaboration with oncologist.
- Perform acceptance testing, commissioning, calibration, and ongoing quality assurance (QA) of linear accelerators, imaging systems (PET-CT, CT, MRI), brachytherapy equipment (if applicable), and related systems.
- Support nuclear medicine and theranostics services, including dosimetry calculations, radiation safety for radioisotope handling, and quality control related to cyclotron-produced isotopes and PET imaging.
- Establish, implement, and maintain comprehensive radiation safety programmes and quality management systems in compliance with Malaysian regulations (Atomic Energy Licensing Board - AELB) and international best practices.
- Provide expert technical advice to clinicians on the physical and technical aspects of imaging and radiation therapy procedures.
- Participate in the selection, specification, installation, and performance evaluation of new equipment and treatment planning systems.
- Train and mentor radiation therapists, technologists, and other clinical staff on equipment operation, safety protocols, and best practices.
- Contribute to clinical protocol development, continuous quality improvement, and any research or service enhancement initiatives at the Centre.
- Maintain accurate documentation and support regulatory inspections, audits, and accreditation processes.
- Stay updated with advances in medical physics technology, techniques, and regulatory requirements relevant to radiation oncology and nuclear medicine.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Education: Master's or Doctoral degree in Medical Physics, Radiation Physics, or a closely related field from a recognised university.
- Relevant clinical experience in radiotherapy physics (experience in a modern LINAC-based department preferred).
- Experience or strong interest in nuclear medicine physics / PET and theranostics is highly advantageous, given the Centre's cyclotron and nuclear medicine facilities.
- Eligibility for or possession of relevant professional registration/certification recognised in Malaysia (or willingness to obtain necessary local licensing/registration with the Atomic Energy Licensing Board and professional bodies).
- Candidates with board certification (or equivalent international qualification such as ABR, CCPM, or similar) will be given preference.
- Strong knowledge of radiation dosimetry, treatment planning systems, imaging physics, and radiation protection.
- Proficiency with modern treatment planning systems and LINAC QA tools.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.
- Commitment to patient safety, continuous improvement, and professional development.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, newly established specialist centre and contribute to building high-quality services.
Preferred
- Experience with advanced techniques such as stereotactic radiosurgery/body radiotherapy, adaptive radiotherapy, or theranostics.
- Familiarity with scripting or data analysis tools to support clinical workflow optimisation.
- Prior experience in commissioning new radiotherapy or nuclear medicine facilities.
