Manager Underwriting – Liability (Financial Lines)
Support the Section Head in managing the Liability portfolio, specifically Financial Lines, overseeing portfolio performance, assisting in strategy development and execution, and holding P&L accountability.
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrate a strong understanding and clear articulation of treaty terms and conditions.
- Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to junior underwriters.
- Support the development and execution of underwriting product strategy, ensuring alignment with overall business objectives, local market demands, and regulatory requirements.
- Assist in driving trading strategies to position the company competitively while maintaining underwriting discipline; take ownership of portfolio decisions.
- Leverage technical expertise to mentor the team and ensure the organization remains competitive and compliant.
- Provide guidance on underwriting portfolios to enhance risk management and profitability, working with the Section Head to ensure a balanced portfolio and long‑term profitability.
- Build and maintain strategic partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, including brokers and clients, fostering collaboration and effective communication.
- Ensure operational excellence through process optimization, governance, compliance, and risk management (including sanctions, underwriting filings, and policy issuance), delivering in line with local standards and practices.
- Liaise with treaty reinsurers on risks exceeding the company’s authority for approval and acceptance.
- Review and update underwriting rules and guidelines for the Financial Lines portfolio.
- Underwrite and analyze risks in accordance with company guidelines.
- Assist the Section Head with internal and external audits and reporting requirements.
Job Specification
- Degree in insurance or any other relevant discipline.
- Preferably with CAII / AAII qualification.
- Minimum 8 to 10 years of working experience in Financial Lines insurance.
- Good technical, analytical, and communication skills.
- Strong drive to excel professionally, and to guide and motivate others.
- Self‑motivated, possessing a positive working attitude and capable of working independently.
- Good organization and effective time management.
- Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office.
