Brief Job Description: The appointed candidate will be responsible for teaching and supervising undergraduate students in the B.Ed. (Hons) in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language programme. The role includes curriculum delivery, academic advising, research activities, and contributing to programme development and enhancement.

Role Purpose

  • To conduct research and/or scholarly activities and/or consultancy contributing to University profile.
  • To undertake management and leadership duties commensurate with the role.

Key Responsibilities

1. Teaching & Learning

  • To undertake teaching, postgraduate by research supervision duties and the associated functions of preparation, assessment, moderation and curriculum development.
  • You will be assigned with not more than 140 contact hours per 4-month block. However, the management reserves the right to revise the manner, location and mode of such workload from time to time as deemed necessary. In the event that the workload exceeds 140 contact hours, you will be remunerated accordingly.
  • To be responsible in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
    • Prepare lecturer materials
    • Upload and update content into Online Learning Management System
    • Develop and assign quizzes, assignments, tutorial, projects, tests, oral presentation, etc.
    • Monitor attendance and progress of students
    • Provide academic leadership in the design and delivery of high-quality teaching programs.
  • Provide academic as well as pastoral advice to students.
    • Be available for academic counselling
    • Provide extra help and guidance to weak students
    • Provide high degree of commitment towards student engagement, individual development and graduate success
    • To supervise student projects, students on field trips and, where appropriate, on placements.
  • To be responsible in the development, administration and marking of exams and other assessments.
    • Produce, collate and moderate quality exam papers
    • Invigilate class tests and final exams and ensuring proper examination environment
    • Prevent academic dishonesty
  • To be responsible to the development, planning and implementation of a high-quality curriculum.
    • Participate in on-going curriculum, syllabus and course structure reviews through involvement in Subject Specialist Groups (SSG)
    • Participate in developing and driving new pedagogical approaches supported by online learning and real-life industry projects
    • Recommend and develop new programs supported by market data including competitive intelligence.
  • To collaborate with the faculty/centre for operational planning; includes workload planning, timetabling, student retention program, and institutional development activities and compliances matters.

2. Research, Scholarship & Consultancy

  • To publish quality peer-reviewed outputs, generate and secure of intellectual property including patents in accordance with the types and volume as outlined in the Annual Research Plan.
  • To maintain a research grant portfolio, work individually or jointly to formulate research proposals to secure external research grants.
  • To develop collaborative links and research partnership with external research teams/ institutions/ industry in related areas and disciplines.
  • To participate in research degree supervision and examination.
  • To participate in local and international conferences as presenter or organizing panel.
  • To mentor early stage researchers include sharing knowledge and skills, or any support for the individual to develop their research profile and activities.

3. Other tasks

  • Work in collaboration with sales & marketing to achieve targeted student enrolment, including organizing school talks, open days, program previews and academic counselling.
  • To perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned from time to time.

Role Requirements

Education/Academic Qualification:

  • PHD/Doctorate or equivalent professional qualification in relevant academic area, or any other qualifications as required by MQA.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or PhD in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language / Chinese Studies / Education or a related discipline.
  • Relevant teaching experience in tertiary education is preferred.
  • Excellent proficiency in Mandarin and English.
  • Knowledge in any other IT software related to Teaching and Learning
  • Data Analytical Skill is an added advantage
