The Head of Department (Physical Education) provides strategic leadership for the PE department, ensuring high-quality teaching and learning, student wellbeing, and the promotion of physical activity and healthy lifestyles across the school. The HOD leads curriculum development, staff performance, co-curricular programmes, and contributes to the wider life of the international school.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, implementation, and review of the Physical Education curriculum aligned with international frameworks (e.g. Cambridge, IB, IGCSE, A-Levels, or equivalent).
- Ensure progression, differentiation, and inclusive practice across all year groups.
- Monitor and evaluate teaching and learning standards within the department.
- Ensure assessment practices are consistent, valid, and aligned with school policy.
Teaching & Learning
- Teach Physical Education classes as per the assigned timetable.
- Model high-quality teaching practices and innovative pedagogy.
- Support teachers in lesson planning, assessment, and classroom management.
- Promote student engagement, sportsmanship, and lifelong fitness habits.
- Line-manage PE teachers and support staff within the department.
- Conduct lesson observations, appraisals, and provide constructive feedback.
- Identify professional development needs and support staff growth.
- Lead departmental meetings and contribute to whole-school initiatives.
Co-Curricular & Sports Programme
- Oversee the planning and delivery of co-curricular sports and activities.
- Coordinate inter-school fixtures, tournaments, and sporting events.
- Promote student participation across competitive and recreational sports.
- Ensure appropriate supervision and safeguarding during all activities.
Health, Safety & Safeguarding
- Ensure all PE and sports activities comply with health and safety regulations.
- Conduct risk assessments for lessons, fixtures, and school trips.
- Maintain and oversee the safe use of sports facilities and equipment.
- Uphold safeguarding and child protection policies at all times.
Administration & Communication
- Manage departmental budgets and resources effectively.
- Maintain accurate records of assessments, attendance, and participation.
- Communicate effectively with parents, colleagues, and senior leaders.
- Contribute to reports, inspections, and accreditation processes.
Whole-School Contribution
- Support school events, house systems, and enrichment programmes.
- Promote the school’s vision, values, and international ethos.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Sports Science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Recognised teaching qualification (e.g. PGCE, QTS, or equivalent).
- Minimum 5 years of PE teaching experience, preferably in an international school.
- Prior leadership or coordination experience is highly desirable.
