Director of Nursing (DON)

The Director of Nursing (DON) provides leadership and strategic direction for the nursing division, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. This role encompasses not only the oversight of daily nursing operations but also the strategic design of long-term nursing goals, workforce development, and the integration of evidence-based practices to ensure safe, compassionate, and efficient patient care.

Job Responsibilities
Strategic & Operational Leadership

Develop and implement nursing strategies that align with the hospital’s mission, values, and long-term goals.

Provide leadership that empowers and motivates nursing staff to achieve professional excellence, fostering teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Establish and review policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure nursing excellence and compliance with statutory and accreditation requirements.

Ensure nursing operations are efficient, cost-effective, and adaptable to evolving healthcare needs, including technology adoption and service expansion.

Clinical Governance & Compliance

Oversee compliance with all statutory, professional, and accreditation standards set by the Ministry of Health, Malaysia Nursing Board, and other relevant authorities.

Lead and monitor clinical governance frameworks to identify risks, implement preventive measures, and sustain patient safety as the highest organizational priority.

Champion ethical nursing practices, maintaining transparency, integrity, and accountability across the nursing division.

Talent Development & Education

Foster a culture of continuous learning, evidence-based practice, and innovation in nursing.

Provide direction for student nurse clinical training programs, continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities, and advanced specialty training.

Establish mentorship and coaching programs to develop future nursing leaders, ensuring a sustainable pipeline of talent for succession planning.

Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration

Collaborate with physicians, allied health professionals, and administrative leaders to foster multidisciplinary teamwork and integrated patient care.

Represent the hospital in external forums, professional associations, and industry events to strengthen the reputation of the nursing services and promote best practices.

Evaluate stakeholder feedback, identify improvement opportunities, and implement corrective and preventive actions.

Resource & Performance Management

Lead workforce planning to forecast nursing manpower requirements, ensuring optimal staffing levels, skill mix, and scheduling to support operational needs.

Oversee financial stewardship of the nursing division, including manpower budget, resource utilization, and cost containment initiatives.

Ensure availability and proper management of clinical consumables, medical supplies, and equipment to avoid service disruptions.

Monitor, evaluate, and report on nursing performance indicators, patient care outcomes, and operational metrics, using data-driven insights to inform decision-making.

Drive continuous quality improvement initiatives and lead projects that enhance patient experience, service efficiency, and organizational resilience.

Job Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing, preferably with a Post Basic qualification in Perioperative Nursing or equivalent.

At least 15 years of working experience including 8 years of management experience in the related field is required for this position.

Must be well-versed in operating theatre management and procedures.

Registered Nurse with Malaysia Nursing Board.

Good working knowledge of fundamental health care service requirements.
