Job summary

Lumentum seeks a CM Engineer in Penang, Malaysia to manage quality and manufacturing execution for optical module and component products at the contract manufacturer. You will collaborate with Lumentum Quality, R&D, NPI, Process Engineering, and CM teams to monitor performance, resolve issues, implement changes, and support stable production.

The role requires ownership of day-to-day quality, translating product requirements into controls, reviewing data, and driving corrective actions.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Optoelectronics, Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality Engineering, or related field.
• Typically 5+ years of experience in quality, manufacturing, NPI, or product engineering within optical, photonic, optoelectronic, semiconductor, or electronics manufacturing.
• Experience working with contract manufacturers and cross-functional teams to resolve product and process quality issues.
• Working knowledge of quality tools including PFMEA, SPC, MSA, 8D, CAPA, and engineering-change management.

Responsibilities

Job description

The CM Engineer is responsible for the quality and manufacturing execution of assigned optical module and optical component products at the contract manufacturer. The role works closely with Lumentum Quality, R&D, NPI, Process Engineering, and the CM's Quality and Engineering teams to monitor product and process performance, resolve issues, implement changes, and support stable production. The CM Engineer reports to the CM Quality Manager and provides timely, data-driven updates on risks, actions, and results.

Key Responsibilities

Assigned Product Quality Ownership

• Own day-to-day quality performance for assigned products at the CM, including defect prevention, containment, corrective action, and quality-risk management.
• Translate Lumentum product requirements into practical quality controls, critical-to-quality characteristics, specifications, acceptance criteria, inspection methods, and reaction plans.
• Review product quality data, defects, yield loss, test results, and customer or internal feedback to identify trends and prioritize actions.

CM Quality and Engineering Collaboration

• Work with the CM Quality and Engineering teams to monitor and improve assembly and test processes, including alignment, laser or detector attach, die and wire bonding, fiber handling, epoxy dispensing and curing, soldering, cleaning, optical and electrical testing, calibration, screening, and final inspection.
• Coordinate regular product and process reviews with the CM, ensuring actions have clear owners, due dates, technical evidence, and effective closure.
• Maintain effective communication between Lumentum and the CM on product requirements, process risks, engineering changes, deviations, and quality performance.

Problem Solving and Corrective Action

• Coordinate containment and lead structured problem solving for customer complaints, product escapes, production defects, audit findings, and other quality issues affecting assigned products.
• Use appropriate methods such as 8D, 5-Why, fishbone analysis, SPC, DOE, and fault-tree analysis to identify root causes and implement sustainable corrective actions.
• Verify corrective-action effectiveness and ensure lessons learned are incorporated into control plans, PFMEA, work instructions, inspection criteria, and training.

NPI, Change and Production Support

• Support NPI, product qualification, manufacturing transfer, process validation, and production ramp for assigned products.
• Review and support updates to control plans, PFMEA, process capability, measurement-system controls, traceability, and engineering-change documentation.
• Provide quality support during production issues, process changes, material changes, and product transitions to protect quality, delivery, and customer commitments.

KPI and Continuous Improvement

• Track and report product and CM quality KPIs, including first-pass yield, defect rate, DPPM, customer complaints, corrective-action aging, process capability.
• Use Pareto analysis and data-driven prioritization to support improvement projects that increase yield, reliability, process stability, and manufacturing efficiency.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering, Optoelectronics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Quality Engineering, or a related field.
• Typically 5+ years of experience in quality, manufacturing, process, NPI, or product engineering within optical, photonic, optoelectronic, semiconductor, or electronics manufacturing.
• Experience working with contract manufacturers and/or cross-functional teams to resolve product and process quality issues.
• Working knowledge of optical module and optical component products, assembly processes, optical/electrical testing, reliability requirements, and manufacturing quality controls.
• Experience with quality tools including control plans, PFMEA, SPC, process capability, MSA, 8D, CAPA, and engineering-change management.
• Strong communication, coordination, follow-through, analytical, and structured problem-solving skills; able to communicate effectively in English.

Working Conditions
