Overview

The Associate Professor in General Surgery will be responsible for leading and delivering high-quality teaching, research, and clinical education within the Faculty of Medicine. This role involves designing and implementing curriculum content, supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducting scholarly research, and contributing to academic leadership and departmental administration. The successful candidate will play a key role in shaping future medical professionals and advancing the university’s academic excellence in surgical education and research.

Responsibilities
  • Teaching & Learning
    • Lead and conduct lectures, tutorials, seminars, and bedside teaching sessions for undergraduate (Years 3 and 5) and postgraduate students.
    • Design, prepare, and develop teaching materials aligned with the curriculum.
    • Conduct clinical skills training and assessments in General Surgery.
    • Prepare, review, and evaluate examination materials (SBA, SAQ, MEQ).
    • Participate in quality assurance and curriculum improvement initiatives.
    • Student Support & Supervision
    • Serve as a mentor and academic supervisor to undergraduate and postgraduate students.
    • Supervise international and local PhD students.
    • Guide students in research projects, including the Research Evidence-Based Medicine (REBM) module.
  • Research & Scholarly Activities
    • Conduct and publish high-impact research in relevant areas of surgery.
    • Present research findings at national and international conferences.
    • Engage in collaborative research and interdisciplinary academic initiatives.
  • Administration & Academic Leadership
    • Serve as a senior member of the Department of Surgery.
    • Act as Course Coordinator for Surgery (Year 3).
    • Serve as an internal examiner and member of the Professional Examination Committee (First Professional and Part 1 & 2 Final Examinations).
    • Contribute to faculty committees, policy development, and academic planning.
    • Participate in continuous professional development and community engagement activities.
Skills and Experiences
  • PhD, MD, or equivalent qualification in Medicine (specialization in General Surgery).
  • Demonstrated experience in medical education and curriculum development.
  • Proven record of effective teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate levels.
  • Strong research background with publications in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.
  • Registered medical practitioner with relevant professional body (e.g., Malaysian Medical Council or equivalent).
Preferred
  • Fellowship or postgraduate qualification in General Surgery or related specialization.
  • Experience supervising PhD or postgraduate research students.
  • Involvement in international collaborations or academic networks.
  • Prior experience in academic leadership roles (e.g., Course Coordinator, Department Head, or Committee Member).
  • Evidence of contributions to curriculum innovation, accreditation, or quality assurance processes.
