Assistant Manager, Shipping & Trade Compliance
Reporting To
Senior Manager, Supply Chain Management
Role Purpose
Responsible for leading and overseeing the Supply Chain team to support operational requirements effectively and efficiently. This rôle involves managing departmental budgets within approved limits, justifying any significant variances with corrective action plans. The Manager ensures departmental KPIs are met, and implements timely corrective or mitigation actions in case of shortfalls. Additionally, the role ensures each function within the department is adequately resourced in terms of manpower, training, and facilities, while proactively providing alternative solutions to support continuous operational excellence.
Key Accountability
- Shipping & Logistics Operations
- Oversee end-to-end import and export operations, including documentation, shipping schedules, and logistics coordination
- Manage relationships with freight forwarders, customs brokers, carriers, and third‑party logistics providers
- Ensure timely and cost‑effective movement of goods while maintaining high service quality
- Monitor shipping performance, freight costs, and resolve transportation‑related issues proactively
- Trade Compliance & Customs Management
- Ensure compliance with international trade regulations, customs requirements, and relevant trade laws
- Maintain accurate classification of goods (HS codes, ECCN, etc.) and valuation in accordance with customs rules
- Oversee the preparation and submission of customs declarations and related import/export documentation
- Develop, implement, and monitor trade compliance programs, policies, and procedures to minimize regulatory risks
- Act as the primary contact for customs audits, inquiries, and inspections
- Governance & Risk Management
- Stay current on global trade regulations, sanctions, embargoes, and free trade agreements affecting business operations
- Conduct periodic internal audits and risk assessments to ensure compliance with customs and trade laws
- Provide training and guidance to cross‑functional teams on compliance requirements and best practices
- Partner with Legal, Finance, Procurement, and Supply Chain teams to ensure adherence to global compliance standards
- Leadership & Strategy
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in shipping and compliance processes
- Lead, coach, and develop team members to build strong functional expertise
- Support strategic projects related to supply chain optimization, exemption programme, free trade zones, bonded warehouses, and cost reduction opportunities
Qualification & Working Experience
- Degree or Master in Supply Chain Management or Business Administration with minimum 10 years of experience in international shipping, Trade compliance, Malaysia’s customs in aviation industry
- Kursus Ejen Kastam (KEK) is an advantage
- 10 years of experience

- Experience in dealing with other government agencies (OGA), customs authorities, and freight forwarders
