This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Staff Backend Engineer in Europe or Latin America.

In this role, you will join a global, remote‑first engineering organization building large‑scale backend systems that power mission‑critical operations across thousands of customers worldwide. You will contribute to complex technical initiatives involving payments, integrations, high availability, and the secure movement of data across distributed services. As a Staff Engineer, you will shape architecture, drive engineering excellence, and mentor other developers while partnering with cross‑functional teams to deliver high‑impact backend features. You will work on modern, event‑driven systems and cloud‑native environments, helping the platform evolve for scalability, security, and performance. This is an opportunity to influence strategic technical decisions while contributing to a product used across more than 150 countries.

Accountabilities
  • Lead the design, development, and enhancement of backend services using Java, PHP, and modern architectural patterns.
  • Drive discussions and decisions on complex technical requirements with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with engineering, product, and leadership teams to deliver secure, reliable, and scalable systems powering global operations.
  • Build and optimize database structures and queries for high‑volume applications using PostgreSQL or MySQL.
  • Develop event‑driven services and contribute to cloud‑native infrastructure using IaC, AWS, and tools such as Kubernetes and Kafka.
  • Ensure backend systems follow best practices in security, compliance, and PCI‑aware development.
  • Mentor and support other engineers, promoting technical excellence, clean code, and a collaborative culture.
  • Contribute to research, prototyping, and long‑term architectural planning to support scalability and innovation.
Requirements
  • 7+ years of experience in Java (Spring) backend development for web applications.
  • 3+ years of experience in PHP or another backend language such as Python.
  • 5+ years of production experience with PostgreSQL or MySQL, including performance optimization for large‑scale workloads.
  • 3+ years of experience building event‑driven services and distributed system architectures.
  • Hands‑on experience with AWS, infrastructure‑as‑code tools (Terraform, ArgoCD, Kubernetes), and messaging/streaming systems like Kafka.
  • Background working on secure, compliant systems, especially in domains such as payments or financial transactions.
  • Strong ability to translate business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Comfort working with global, remote teams and collaborating on highly visible initiatives.
  • Strong knowledge of engineering best practices, design patterns, observability, and automated testing.
  • Bonus: Experience in large‑scale system design, Domain Driven Design, or regulated environments (including PCI‑DSS).
  • Bonus: Prior experience in remote‑first organizations.
