The Telecom Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, integration, and support of telecommunications systems in oil and gas facilities. This includes voice, data, safety, and operational communication systems necessary for plant operations, safety, and emergency response. The engineer ensures telecom systems meet technical, operational, and regulatory requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
General Description of Role and Responsibilities [ but not limited to ]:
- Review and consent to the developed telecom system architecture for facilities including:
- Voice and data communication (IP PBX, LAN/WAN, Wi-Fi)
- Public Address and General Alarm (PAGA) systems
- CCTV and security systems
- VHF/UHF radio systems and marine communication
- VSAT and fiber-optic backbone infrastructure
- Telephone exchanges, intercom, and telecom cabling infrastructure
- Review and consent to the prepared technical specifications, datasheets, drawings, and network topologies.
- Coordinate telecom system requirements with control systems (DCS, ESD, SCADA) and safety systems (F&G, HVAC).
Standards & Compliance
- Ensure designs meet industry standards (IEC, ITU, NFPA, ISO, API, NORSOK, and client-specific specifications).
- Ensure that designed telecom systems are for hazardous areas (ATEX/IECEx zones) and ensure equipment certification.
- Ensure cybersecurity measures are considered in all communication networks.
- Prepare telecom equipment Material Requisitions (MRs) and Technical Bid Evaluations (TBEs).
- Review vendor drawings, schematics, and compliance documents.
- Participate in FATs (Factory Acceptance Tests) and ensure proper configuration and integration.
- Supervise installation, termination, and testing of telecom cabling, antennas, devices, and racks.
- Perform Site Acceptance Tests (SAT), system integration, and commissioning activities.
- Troubleshoot and resolve telecom issues during startup and operational readiness testing.
Operations & Maintenance Support
- Support plant operations with telecom system upgrades, troubleshooting, and configuration changes.
- Maintain telecom documentation including network diagrams, IP address allocations, and user manuals.
- Ensure telecom systems remain operable, secure, and aligned with operational requirements.
- Strong knowledge of telecom protocols, radio frequency planning, network design, and signal integrity.Familiarity with PAGA, CCTV, IP networking, fiber optics, and structured cabling.
- Understanding of telecom integration with emergency and control systems.
- Competency in telecom network simulation and configuration tools.
- Effective communication, vendor coordination, and problem-solving skills.
Qualifications, Experience, Knowledge and Skills:
- Bachelor of Science Degree BSc in Automation & Control Engineering from an accredited university.
- Work experience of ten (10) years in the sought Discipline after earning the BSc degree.
- Candidates should have a minimum of 5 years of offshore experience in total, with at least the last 3-5 years spent on offshore projects.
- Excellent spoken a written English including proven ability to write specifications and reports.
