Embedded Linux Consultant (System Image Rebuild for Domotz Box Platform)

About the Project

Domotz is seeking an experienced Embedded Linux Consultant to assist in rebuilding and modernizing the system image for the Domotz Box platform— a fleet of around 20,000 deployed units.

Responsibilities

  1. Analyze the current system image, hardware platform, and deployment constraints.
  2. Design and implement a new, stable, maintainable system image based on an up-to-date Linux kernel and supported OS.
  3. Ensure backward compatibility and smooth transition strategies where necessary.
  4. Collaborate with internal teams (Network Collector, DevOps) to plan for side-by-side deployment and upgrades.
  5. Document build procedures and operational guides for the new system image.
  6. Support planning and validation of an OTA (Over-The-Air) mass upgrade strategy across the existing deployed base.
  7. Advise on best practices for long-term maintenance and security patching.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Proven expertise in embedded Linux system development and maintenance.
  • Deep understanding of bootloaders, kernel building, OS image creation, and OTA upgrade mechanisms.
  • Strong troubleshooting and debugging skills at system and kernel level.
  • Ability to produce clear technical documentation.

Preferred Skills

  • Prior work migrating devices from legacy systems to modern platforms.
  • Hands-on experience with Ubuntu Core platforms (Core 16, Core 20, Core 22).
  • Familiarity with Ubuntu Core system architecture and snap packages.
  • Knowledge of the ARM architecture and device-level Linux optimizations.
  • Experience working with large-scale, deployed IoT or embedded device fleets.

Deliverables

  • Rebuilt and validated system image ready for mass deployment.
  • Detailed documentation of the image build process.
  • Recommendations for OTA upgrade process and risk mitigation.
  • (Optionally) Support during rollout testing and early production phases.

Additional Details

This role is full-time, fully remote, with flexible hours and no requirement for synchronized work with the team. The project duration is estimated between one and three to four months.
