Qualifications

The Opportunity

The Wealth & Premier Solutions Retail Delivery Head is a senior engineering leadership role responsible for spearheading the end-to-end software engineering delivery across the Retail Banking portfolio within the International Wealth and Premier Banking, Wealth & Premier Solutions department. This role demands a high-calibre engineering leader who combines deep hands-on technical expertise, a proven enterprise delivery track record, and a forward-looking vision to drive the departmental AI transformation.

The role holder provides strategic technical direction while actively driving hands‑on engineering execution—leading from the front to architect, build, and operate highly scalable, resilient, and secure retail banking platforms. In addition to meeting critical business delivery milestones and optimizing Run‑the‑Bank (RTB) efficiency, the Delivery Head champions the adoption of AI‑augmented engineering practices (AI SDLC, generative AI coding assistants, and agentic workflows) across the organization, accelerating delivery velocity, engineering craftsmanship, and continuous innovation.

What You’ll Do

• Strategic Technical Direction & Hands‑On Coding Capability: Provide visionary yet hands‑on engineering delivery and technical leadership across engineering initiatives; actively engage in system architecture, technical design, critical code reviews, and high‑complexity technical problem‑solving to ensure robust, scalable, and resilient software delivery.
• End‑to‑End Delivery Excellence & Execution: Direct cross‑functional engineering teams to deliver mission‑critical, enterprise‑scale retail banking software solutions on time, within budget, and with uncompromising quality and reliability.
• AI Transformation & AI‑Assisted SDLC: Spearhead the transformation of software engineering practices by driving the adoption of Generative AI and AI‑augmented tools across the entire SDLC (AI coding assistants, automated test generation, AI‑powered code analysis, agentic workflows, and intelligent observability).
• Engineering Standards, Architecture & Craftsmanship: Establish, enforce, and continuously elevate hands‑on engineering standards, clean code practices, microservices design patterns, API‑first architectures, and modern DevSecOps automation across all delivery squads.
• DORA Metrics & Delivery Performance Optimization: Drive the rigorous adoption of DORA metrics (Deployment Frequency, Lead Time for Changes, Change Failure Rate, and Time to Restore Service) to benchmark, measure, and relentlessly optimize engineering throughput, release velocity, and system quality.
• Cost Efficiency & RTB Optimization: Implement structural cost‑efficiency strategies to reduce Run‑the‑Bank (RTB) operational expenditures through technical debt remediation, system simplification, automated self‑healing, and legacy modernization while maintaining 24/7 service availability.
• Talent Development, Mentorship & Hands‑On Culture: Build, mentor, and inspire a world‑class, high‑performing engineering organization; foster a culture of hands‑on technical craftsmanship, continuous learning, innovation, and active experimentation with emerging technologies.
• Stakeholder Collaboration & Value Realization: Partner closely with executive business stakeholders, product owners, enterprise architects, and cross‑functional teams to translate commercial objectives into robust, scalable technical delivery roadmaps
• Risk, Security & Regulatory Governance: Ensure all engineering practices and deliverables strictly adhere to HSBC security baselines, architectural governance, data privacy mandates, and financial regulatory requirements.

What you will need to succeed in the role

• Academic Background: University graduate with a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related STEM field from a top‑tier institution.
• Domain Knowledge & Regulatory Awareness: Strong business domain knowledge in Retail Banking, Wealth Management, or Financial Services, including deep familiarity with financial security, data privacy, and regulatory compliance standards.
• High‑Scale Retail Banking Systems: Substantial experience in architecting, building, and operating high‑concurrency, low‑latency, and zero‑downtime distributed retail banking or fintech platforms.
• Deep Hands‑on Technical & Full‑Stack Expertise: Strong, active hands‑on background across full‑stack engineering (modern frontend frameworks, microservices, enterprise Java/Kotlin/Node/Python, distributed databases, cloud architecture e.g. AWS/GCP/Azure, API gateways, and event‑driven architectures), with the proven ability to review code, debug complex production issues, and guide deep architectural decisions.
• AI & GenAI in Engineering: Demonstrable hands‑on experience in pioneering GenAI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, LLM‑based coding agents, automated QA/DevOps agents) to elevate engineering productivity and delivery velocity. Practical expertise and strong enthusiasm for AI‑driven engineering transformation; automated testing/DevSecOps pipelines, and modern agile engineering methodologies (CI/CD, TDD/BDD, GitOps).
• Extensive Engineering Leadership & Delivery Track Record: Substantial experience in senior software engineering leadership roles, with a demonstrable track record of successfully delivering large‑scale, mission‑critical retail banking or enterprise software platforms from concept to production.
• Performance & Metrics‑Driven Mindset: Demonstrated experience utilizing DORA metrics, telemetry, and engineering dashboards to drive measurable enhancements in team productivity, deployment frequency, and software quality.
• Inspirational Leadership & Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Outstanding interpersonal, coaching, and executive stakeholder management skills, capable of inspiring diverse, high‑performing technical teams and articulating technical vision to business leaders.
