Job summary

Consulting Engineers Group (CEG) invites applications for a Tunnel Design Expert to lead and review tunnel designs for a major railway project based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. A Master’s degree (M.E./M.Tech) in Geotechnical/Structural/Tunnel Engineering and 8+ years of underground experience are required.

You will apply NATM, rock mechanics, and geotechnical assessment to ensure safe, compliant designs and coordinate with Indian Railways and other stakeholders.

Qualifications

• Master's degree in Geotechnical/Structural/Tunnel Engineering is mandatory.
• 8+ years of core underground tunnel experience.
• Railway or Metro tunnel project background preferred.
• Proficient in tunnel design software (STAAD.Pro, AutoCAD, PLAXIS, Rocscience).
• Knowledge of NATM, ground control, waterproofing, and QA/QC.

Responsibilities

• Design & review of tunnel designs, calculations, rock support, shotcrete, rock bolts, steel ribs, lattice girders.
• Interpret geotechnical reports to assess ground parameters and lining stability.
• Review rail alignment plans, profiles, cross-sections, and clearances in tunnels.
• Ensure compliance with IRWM/IRCM and other standards, QA/QC, and HSE.
• Coordinate with client reps (Indian Railways/RVNL/Metro), consultants, and on-site teams.
• Conduct risk assessments for underground works, water ingress, and slope stabilization.

Role Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Tunnel Design Expert to join our major railway project based in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The successful candidate must hold a Masters Degree (M.E. / M.Tech) in a relevant civil engineering discipline and possess a minimum of 8 years of experience in underground engineering. The role involves leading or independently reviewing detailed engineering designs, alignment plans, and structural components for railway tunnels, requiring deep technical proficiency in tunnel construction methodologies (such as NATM), rock mechanics, and geotechnical assessment.

Key Responsibilities

• Design & Review: Undertake comprehensive technical reviews of detailed tunnel designs, checking construction calculations, rock support systems, shotcrete, rock bolts, steel ribs, and lattice girders.
• Geotechnical & Structural Integrity: Interpret complex geological and geotechnical reports to assess ground parameters, excavation sequences, and structural lining stability.
• Alignment & Profiling: Review and optimize the rail alignment plan, profiles, cross-sections, and clearances inside tunnel structures.
• Quality & Safety Assurance: Ensure that all drawings, methodologies, and engineering calculations fully comply with Indian Railways Codes (IRWM / IRCM), international engineering standards, QA/QC requirements, and strict HSE practices.
• Cross-Functional Coordination: Collaborate seamlessly with client representatives (Indian Railways/RVNL/Metro authorities), general consultants, proof consultants, and on-site execution teams to resolve structural or design deficiencies quickly.
• Risk Assessment: Perform rigorous engineering risk assessments for underground works, ground control, water ingress, and slope stabilization at tunnel portals.

Required Qualifications & Experience

• Education: Master's degree (M.E. / M.Tech) in Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, or Tunnel Engineering is mandatory. Candidates holding only a Bachelor's degree will not be considered.
• Experience: Minimum of 8 years of core experience in the design, engineering, or design proof review of underground tunnels.
• Sector Background: Proven track record of working on large-scale infrastructure projects ideally Railway or Metro rail tunnel projects.
• Technical Software: High proficiency in design and analysis software such as STAAD.Pro, AutoCAD, PLAXIS (2D/3D), or Rocscience suite (Dips, Slide2).
• Domain Knowledge: Expert knowledge of New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) principles, groundwater control, grouting, and tunnel waterproofing systems.
