Job Overview

As the Technical Director for the Planning & Development team, you will lead a team of technical experts and deliver engineering solutions for UK road projects. You will work closely with the UK Technical Leadership Group, project directors, managers and the Business Development team across the P&C P&D Strategic Business Unit, and report to the Head of P&D GCC.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the technical aspects of UK road projects and provide engineering support and guidance to the Development team.
  • Supervise and monitor engineers for surveys and road designs, ensuring compliance with UK technical standards (DMRB, MCHW, BS codes).
  • Provide support for demolition, site clearance, road and sewer infrastructure works, utilities, and other construction‑related matters.
  • Maintain technical support to regional departments and discipline leads in India and the UK.
  • Build and nurture client relationships, enhance technical skills, and drive business growth.
  • Govern the technical output of development teams and collaborate with UK technical governance of project deliverables.
  • Manage technical input to projects, ensuring deliverables are fit for purpose and meet client expectations.
  • Support UK bidding opportunities and oversee PDRs, promotion, training, and mentoring of the Technical Team.
  • Track record in securing new workstreams and generating new business opportunities in the Development sector.
  • Ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Lead design solutions, develop methodologies, and produce technical reports for various stages of roads projects.
  • Manage consultants in the preparation of designs for alignments, junctions, public realm, active‑travel infrastructure, and other external level designs.
  • Coordinate remediation strategies and secure regulatory approvals.
  • Prepare engineering drawings and documentation for site start, including standard construction details and remediation proposals.
  • Obtain necessary technical approvals for roads and other relevant designs.
  • Provide utility drawings of existing, proposed and diverted routes, including information from utility providers.
  • Obtain and manage signs and road‑marking designs and work associated with temporary traffic management.
  • Monitor and review team capability in the use of required standards, processes and software tools, and identify opportunities to upskill or recruit new capabilities.
  • Contribute to the design of operational processes, systems, quality measurement processes and achievement of KPIs.
  • Ensure health and safety, CDM and quality assurance governance across all projects.
  • Exercise principal designer role on large‑scale schemes, undertaking continuous professional development.
  • Engage in audits of adherence to WSP Management and Quality processes and implement corrective measures where required.
  • Mentor team members towards professional accreditation or equivalent, and assist in recruitment to achieve budgeted and programmed team growth.
  • Promote the team’s achievements within the P&D, WSP UK and the wider business through targeted profile‑raising activities.
  • Develop and maintain client relationships to ensure repeat business, client satisfaction and internal collaboration.
  • Keep up to date with market and competitor knowledge across the BU.
  • Implement and maintain the Business Management System.
Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 18 years of experience designing and managing the technical delivery of development infrastructure projects.
  • Chartered Engineer status with a recognised professional institution (e.g., ICE, CIWEM) is preferred.
  • Proficient knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW).
  • Strong project and resource management skills with a track record of delivering large‑detail design projects in the highways, roads and infrastructure sector.
  • Excellent communication, client‑handling, interpersonal and listening skills, with the ability to influence and interact with technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in road design software (Civil 3D, AutoCAD, AutoTurn, OpenRoads, MicroStation) and MS Office.
  • Experience in managing technical teams, promoting professional development, and mentoring for accreditation.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, CDM, and quality assurance standards in the UK.
  • Awareness of emerging technologies relevant to the UK highways and roads sector, and experience liaising with UK clients, co‑professionals and design teams.
  • Strong time management, organisational and written communication skills.
