Job Context: Aditya Birla Sunlife AMC Ltd is one of the early entrants into the market with a 14 year history of Asset Management in India. It is a joint venture between the Aditya Birla Group and the Sun Life Financial Services Inc. of Canada. About the AMC industry – The Indian MF Industry has grown on the back of some really strong performance of the Indian equity market. However, it remains to be seen whether the industry has matured enough to handle the downside as well, when the performance of the market tapers, as it has since January 2008. The long term outlook for Indian equities continues to remain positive, and going forward, equity returns are expected to track the earnings growth. Challenges – As the industry moves from its nascence to adolescence, a strong regulatory framework will set forth challenges in optimising the balance between growth and governance. Rural participation in mutual funds continues to be poor due to lack of investor awareness, inefficiencies in fund transfer mechanisms, presence of safer substitutes for savings and the cost of establishing presence in smaller areas. The need of the hour to aid fund houses in distribution and penetration will be banking infrastructure, distribution services and adequate technological solutions to ensure a sustainable cost – benefit model of growth. Global Fund houses are set to make their presence felt in the industry and some of these organisations are known for their specialisation in structured products while offering an array of different choices to the investor. With competition heating up and most Indian fund houses offering the same bouquet of products, product differentiation could take centre stage moving forward. Innovative distribution models and service standards would also be key distinguishing factors amongst players.
