Job Description

The Water Systems Team Member is responsible for the design ownership, operation, compliance, and lifecycle performance of pharmaceutical water and clean utility systems, including Purified Water (PW), Water for Injection (WFI), Clean Steam, Clean and related distribution loops. The role ensures GMP compliance, high availability, robust data integrity, and cost‑efficient operation, partnering closely with QA, Production, Validation, and EHS.

Roles & Responsibilities
Operations & Reliability
  • Own day‑to‑day operation of PW, WFI, Clean Steam, and distribution networks, ensuring 24/7 quality and uptime.
  • Oversee sanitization/thermal cycles, loop velocities, dead‑leg control, and biofilm prevention strategies.
  • Lead utilities alarm management, deviation triage, and root cause analysis (RCA) using structured problem‑solving (5‑Why, Fishbone, FMEA).
  • Implement and track preventive and predictive maintenance (CMMS‑based), spares strategy, and criticality ranking.
Compliance & Quality
  • Ensure systems operate per GMP, USP/EP/JP monographs, WHO TRS, EU Annex 1, 21 CFR Parts 210/211, Data Integrity (ALCOA+), and 21 CFR Part 11 for electronic records in monitoring systems.
  • Maintain validated state: URS, Risk Assessments, DQ/IQ/OQ/PQ, change control, periodic review, and requalification.
  • Own and trend critical quality attributes: Conductivity/Resistivity, TOC, Microbial counts, Endotoxin, Temperature, Flow.
  • Generate and defend audit‑ready documentation; host/support regulatory and client audits.
Engineering & Projects
  • Provide technical ownership for ASME‑BPE compliant design, loop modifications, and CAPEX projects (new skids, heat exchangers, distribution extensions).
  • Partner with OEMs/Integrators; review PFDs/P&IDs, FAT/SAT protocols, and ensure CSV for PLC/SCADA/BMS.
  • Drive energy and water optimization, heat recovery, and life‑cycle cost reductions.
Monitoring, Data & Digital
  • Own online monitoring systems (conductivity, TOC, temperature, flow, pressure) and data integrity.
  • Establish robust alarm limits, control strategy, and trend reviews with action thresholds.
  • Build and report KPIs (see below) with monthly governance and continuous improvement actions.
People Leadership & Cross‑Functional Collaboration
  • Lead a team of technicians/shift engineers; plan rosters and develop skill matrices.
  • Train Production, QC and QA on sampling, handling, and responses to excursions.
  • Work cross‑functionally with QA, QC Microbiology, Production, EHS, Procurement and Finance.
  • Coordinate with cross functional teams for ensuring that preventive maintenance is carried out as per schedules in SAP.
  • Prepare the PMP (Preventive Maintenance Plan) and maintain records of breakdowns and maintenance activities in the PMP as per defined frequency.
  • Handle external contractors and agencies, reviewing and ensuring implementation of the instructions (Work Instructions and SOPs) related to production operation.
  • Train and assist team members during troubleshoot and breakdown of machines and commissioning of new Equipment.
  • Ensure balance investigation and inventory control for all instrument spare parts.
  • Plan, consolidate and submit the maintenance budget for the allotted area/unit; ensure the maintenance expense is within the budgeted amount.
  • Ensure availability of all process equipment and regular maintenance of all equipment spares by following up with OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers), external vendors and SCM.
  • Account for enduring closure and completion of all assigned CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) on time.
  • Support any technical/documentation activities at site as per instructions from Section Head.
  • Prepare, update and maintain all necessary documents for audits (SOPs, formats, PM books, protocols, Machine History Books).
  • Maintain facilities in accordance with GMP and cGMP guidelines.
  • Ensure implementation of Good Engineering Practices (GEP) at Site.
Qualifications
  • Educational qualification: A Diploma or a B.Tech (Electrical/Instrumentation/Mechanical)
  • Minimum work experience: 3 to 6 years
  • Skills & attributes:
    • Technical Skills: Knowledge and experience in handling Instrumentation maintenance, preventive maintenance, equipment breakdown maintenance, and predictive maintenance.
    • Experience in troubleshooting and breakdown management of machines and equipment.
    • Experience in managing preventive maintenance plans.
    • Ability to manage maintenance budget of an area/unit.
    • Knowledge of GMP and GEP.
    • Behavioural skills: Communication and collaboration skills to coordinate with cross functional teams, external contractors and agencies.
    • Attention to detail to ensure preventive maintenance, documentation, and inventory control.
    • Commitment to quality and compliance.
