Job summary

Wabtec is seeking a Systems Engineer to collaborate with engineering teams, product management, and railroad customers on the design, development, testing, and deployment of Train Handling solutions. You will contribute to requirements development, system analysis, verification activities, and product enhancements while adhering to engineering processes and standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science from an accredited college or university.
  • 1–2 years hands-on design, requirements development and implementation experience involving engineering systems, hardware/software engineering, and/or data information systems.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, global environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Responsibilities

  • Support design, development, testing, and deployment of Train Handling solutions.
  • Gather, document, and analyze customer and system requirements for product development.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Software Engineering, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation, and Applications Engineering.
  • Participate in requirements reviews, design reviews, verification activities, and technical discussions.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues and analyzing system behavior under guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to field testing, validation, and evaluation activities for train automation and optimization solutions.
  • Prepare technical documentation, reports, and engineering deliverables.
  • Learn operational concepts from railroad subject matter experts and apply to product development.
  • Develop knowledge of industry standards, engineering best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to train automation and distributed control systems.
  • Utilize AI-enabled tools to improve productivity, learning, analysis, and engineering outcomes.

Job description

Wabtec's Train Handling solutions include Trip Optimizer® and Locotrol®, which work together to optimize train performance and automate freight operations. Trip Optimizer creates and executes fuel-efficient operating plans that meet schedule and train-handling requirements, while Locotrol enables coordinated control of distributed locomotives throughout the train. Together, these technologies improve train handling, fuel efficiency, operational safety, and the ability to operate longer and heavier trains.

As a Systems Engineer, you will work closely with engineering teams, product management, and railroad customers to support the development of innovative solutions that advance automation within the rail industry.

How will you make a difference?

As a Systems Engineer, you will support the design, development, testing, and deployment of Wabtec's Train Handling portfolio. Working under the guidance of experienced engineers, you will contribute to requirements development, system analysis, verification activities, and product enhancements while adhering to established engineering processes and standards.

The successful candidate will demonstrate an AI-enabled mindset, leveraging AI tools to improve research, problem-solving, productivity, and technical decision-making. You will continuously learn emerging technologies and apply data-driven insights to help deliver high-quality solutions that meet customer and business needs.

What will your typical day look like?
  • Support the design, development, testing, and enhancement of Train Handling solutions while applying sound engineering principles and established development processes.
  • Assist in gathering, documenting, and analyzing customer and system requirements to support product development and continuous improvement activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Product Management, Software Engineering, Train Control, Office Systems, Safety, Validation, and Applications Engineering, to support project execution and successful product delivery.
  • Participate in requirements reviews, design reviews, verification activities, and technical discussions throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Assist in troubleshooting technical issues, analyzing system behavior, and supporting resolution efforts under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Contribute to field testing, validation, and evaluation activities for train automation and optimization solutions.
  • Support the preparation of technical documentation, reports, project updates, and engineering deliverables.
  • Work with railroad subject matter experts and engineering teams to learn operational concepts and apply them to product development efforts.
  • Develop knowledge of industry standards, engineering best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to train automation, optimization, and distributed control systems.
  • Utilize AI-enabled tools and technologies to improve productivity, accelerate learning, support analysis activities and enhance engineering outcomes.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Foundational understanding of systems engineering principles and product development processes.
  • Exposure to software, controls, automation, transportation, or embedded systems through coursework, internships, or project experience.
  • Familiarity with systems architecture concepts and distributed systems is a plus.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Interest in applying AI-enabled tools and data-driven approaches to engineering challenges.
  • Knowledge of railroad operations, AAR standards, CENELEC standards, or safety-critical systems is preferred but not required.
