Job summary

Zebra Technologies is seeking a Technical Lead / Supervisor, Software Engineering to lead the backend and shepherd projects from requirements to delivery. You will be a hands-on IC mentoring engineers, shaping architecture, and using Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs to build scalable systems.

You will supervise across product teams, collaborate with cloud infrastructure, apply AI tools to accelerate development, and champion observability and reliability to ensure robust software in production.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of IT experience with Tech Lead or similar leadership roles.
• Deep backend expertise with Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills including schema design and query optimisation.
• Frontend familiarity with React, Angular, and TypeScript.
• Cloud experience with AWS and/or Azure.
• DevOps experience with Docker Swarm and Kubernetes.
• Experience with Redis and in-memory data stores.
• Familiarity with AI concepts and practical use of AI tools in development.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership & Client Engagement: Lead client interactions, gather and refine technical requirements, and translate them into actionable engineering tasks.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Actively collaborate with cross-functional teams working on the same product, as well as with other external or dependent teams on a need basis, to ensure seamless integration, alignment, and delivery.
• Architecture & Design: Spearhead technical design and architectural decisions for new and existing projects whenever necessary.
• Cloud Infrastructure & Performance: Monitor cloud application performance, deeply understand deployed cloud components, and actively collaborate with the infrastructure team to suggest and implement architectural improvements.
• Team Mentorship: Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and support to the engineering team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and positive problem-solving.
• Hands‑On Development: Act as a strong individual contributor (IC) working on user story implementation, primarily focusing on Node.js and GraphQL backends.
• Modern Engineering Practices: Champion Spec Driven Development (SDD) and efficiently leverage AI concepts and tools (e.g., LLMs, code assistants) to accelerate development workflows.
• System Reliability: Implement and monitor robust telemetry‑based observability to ensure system health, performance, and reliability.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Experience: 10+ years of proven experience in the IT industry, with an extensive background in Tech Lead or similar leadership roles.
• Primary Tech Stack: Deep, hands‑on expertise in backend development using Node.js, GraphQL, and REST APIs.
• Database Expertise: Strong hands‑on proficiency with PostgreSQL, including database schema design, complex query writing, indexing, and query optimization.
• Secondary Tech Stack: Solid working knowledge of frontend frameworks such as React, Angular, and TypeScript.
• Cloud Platforms: Hands‑on experience with major cloud providers, specifically AWS and/or Azure, with a strong understanding of core cloud services and deployment models.
• DevOps & Infrastructure: Proven hands‑on experience with containerization and orchestration tools, specifically Docker Swarm and Kubernetes.
• Data & Caching: Strong experience working with in‑memory data stores and caches, particularly Redis.
• AI Integration: Familiarity with AI concepts and the practical ability to use AI tools effectively to assist in daily coding and architectural tasks.

Soft Skills: Exceptional communication skills, ability to collaborate effectively across multiple teams, and a proactive, positive attitude toward tackling complex technical challenges.
