Job Description
As part of our world‑class software engineering team, you will build the next‑generation observability platforms for LinkedIn, including instrumenting applications and infrastructure to collect meaningful metrics, logs, and traces; collaborating with development teams to ensure consistent and comprehensive instrumentation across all systems; and developing and maintaining libraries, frameworks, and tools to simplify instrumentation. You will work at the Observability Engineering team, sharing knowledge with a broader community while making a real impact within LinkedIn.

Observability Platforms (sub‑team of OE) oversees billions of operational metrics ingested every minute and operates custom-built platforms for metrics ingestion, storage, retrieval, visualization, alerting, incident creation & escalation, remediation, health‑checking, and experience platform.

This role is based in Bangalore, India and is hybrid. The work location is performed both from home and from a LinkedIn office on select days as determined by business needs.

Responsibilities
  • Own the technical strategy for broad or complex requirements with forward‑looking approaches that solve large open‑ended problems.
  • Design, implement, and optimize the performance of large‑scale distributed systems with security and compliance in mind.
  • Improve the observability and understandability of various systems, focusing on developer productivity and system sustainability.
  • Communicate effectively with the team, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Mentor other engineers, define a challenging technical culture, and help build a fast‑growing team.
  • Work closely with the open‑source community to participate in and influence cutting‑edge open‑source projects.
  • Deliver incremental impact by driving innovation while iteratively building and shipping software at scale.
  • Diagnose technical problems, debug in production environments, and automate routine tasks.
Basic Qualifications
  • BA/BS degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 8+ years of industry experience in software design, development, and algorithm‑related solutions.
  • 8+ years of experience programming in object‑oriented languages such as Java, C++, Python, Go, C, or other functional languages.
  • Hands‑on experience developing large‑scale observability platforms with an understanding of distributed systems, microservice architecture, pub‑sub systems, and logging/metrics/tracing platforms.
  • 3+ years in an architect or equivalent technical leadership role.
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in data collection technologies such as OpenTelemetry, cloud APIs, instrumenting infrastructure, and application event data.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts.
  • Ability to navigate complex decision‑making and communicate across teams.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, leading and mentoring others in observability best practices.
  • Experience in architecting, building, and running large‑scale systems.
  • Maintainer or contributor of open‑source projects.
