Job description

The Opportunity

As a Staff Software Engineer on the Care Interactions team, you will shape and build the systems that enable Hinge Health's care teams to communicate with members and deliver personalized musculoskeletal care at scale. Care Interactions is part of CareHub, Hinge Health's internal care-delivery platform used by physical therapists, health coaches, physicians, care managers, and other clinical teams.

The team owns core communication and care-delivery capabilities, including in-app messaging, video visits, scheduling-related experiences, clinical notes, care plans, and the CareHub interaction record used for coordinated care. You will provide technical leadership across these complex, workflow-heavy domains, helping the team build reliable, secure, and intuitive products that reduce fragmented tools and repetitive administrative work so care team members can focus on clinical judgment and member connection.

CareHub is evolving toward an AI-first platform. In this role, you may help build AI-assisted capabilities for visit preparation, documentation, summarization, contextual recommendations, and follow-up workflows. You will contribute to systems that are clinically useful, observable, resilient, and safe, with appropriate human oversight for decisions that affect care delivery.

You will partner closely with Product, Design, Clinical, Quality, and other engineering teams to take problems from discovery through production. This is an opportunity to work on high-impact, workflow-heavy products where thoughtful technical decisions can improve care-team efficiency, member experience, and Hinge Health’s ability to deliver care at scale.

This is a hands-on Staff Engineer role. You will write production code, lead architecture and design reviews, participate in operational response, and coach engineers toward stronger technical ownership.

What You'll Accomplish
  • Deliver large projects that introduce new product capabilities, often acting as a maintainer for key code repositories.

  • Break down complex problems into manageable tasks, ensuring steady and predictable delivery while identifying and resolving root causes of incidents.

  • Collaborate with your team to roadmap and execute ambitious technical strategies, balancing short-term and long-term trade-offs.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers, providing thoughtful code reviews and real-time pairing.

  • Integrate and leverage AI technologies to automate processes and enhance product features, contributing to Hinge Health’s AI-driven care platform.

  • Proactively improve the maintainability, availability, and performance of the team’s features, and contribute to the team’s overall architecture and developer tooling.

  • Communicate technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical partners, and document solutions for future reference.

Hinge Health Hybrid Model

We believe that remote work and in-person work have their own advantages and disadvantages, and we want to be able to leverage the best of both worlds. Employees in hybrid roles are required to be in the office 3 days/week.

This is a Bengaluru-based role that involves regular interaction and collaboration with Hinge Health colleagues in San Francisco, CA.

  • Time zones: San Francisco is in the Pacific Time Zone, which is 12 hours and 30 minutes behind India Standard Time (e.g., 8am in San Francisco is 8:30pm in Bengaluru).

  • Hours: Applicants should be open to meetings in the late evening following India Standard Time to align with San Francisco working hours (8am - 6pm PT).

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering or related technical field

  • 10+ years of non-internship full time professional software development experience

  • 4+ years of experience with at least one software programming language

  • 4+ years of experience in the full software development life cycle

  • 3+ years of work experience with react JS and Node JS/ Typescript

  • 1+ years of experience in mentoring and leading junior team members, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams, and contributing to project planning and decision-making

  • Experience with using AI tools such as Github copilot, Cursor, LangChain, LangGraph

  • Experience delivering large software projects or features in a production environment.

  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language (e.g., Python, Java, JavaScript, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications
  • A platform-as-product mindset: understanding internal users and consumers, defining clear contracts, improving developer experience and adoption, and measuring platform outcomes.

  • Strong backend and distributed-systems fundamentals, including latency, throughput, availability, capacity, backpressure, consistency, resilience, and failure-mode analysis.

  • Experience integrating large language models or generative AI services into production workflows with appropriate evals, validation, observability, and failure handling.

  • Experience defining and maintaining SLOs and SLAs, using error budgets, service-health metrics, alerting, on-call practices, incident response, and root-cause analysis to improve reliability.

  • Experience improving observability through metrics, structured logs, traces, dashboards, and actionable alerts, with practical knowledge of cache design and invalidation, database performance KPIs, query and index tuning, connection pools, and capacity management

  • Experience with headless CMS integrations, webhook-driven systems, vendor adapters, content delivery networks, or publishing pipelines.

  • Experience with durable workflow orchestration systems such as Temporal, or comparable workflow technology.

  • Experience with media processing tools such as ffmpeg, adaptive bitrate video, text-to-speech, speech-to-text, or caption formats such as WebVTT.

  • Experience with event streaming, such as Kafka, and CI/CD automation, such as GitHub Actions.

  • Experience working in healthcare, privacy-sensitive, regulated, or otherwise high-trust environments.

  • Experience mentoring senior engineers or serving as a technical lead for a platform, migration, or cross-functional launch.
