Job summary

JS, an AI-native legal platform, seeks a Staff Engineer to lead a small, high-caliber engineering team in Bangalore. You will own end-to-end engineering, from architecture to delivery, with hands-on coding and direct collaboration with the CEO to shape technical direction.

You will work on AI systems, data pipelines for Indian courts and other sources, and ensure robust production quality, latency and cost management.

Qualifications

• 8+ years building and shipping production software.
• Strong backend depth, especially Python, with frontend awareness (TypeScript).
• Real experience putting LLMs into production: evals, retrieval, costs, latency, failure modes.
• Solid cloud infra skills: Kubernetes, Terraform/Terragrunt, GitOps.
• Experience leading engineers or owning a major system as a team leader.
• Builder’s instinct: ship and measure, not just discuss.
• Clear written communication with good decision-tracking.
• Preferably less than 1 month notice period.

Responsibilities

• Lead an engineering team of 5–6, owning end-to-end technical direction.
• Own AI systems: agents, model routing, eval harnesses, ensuring citation correctness and latency control.
• Build data pipelines for legal sources, citation graphs, and search indexing.
• Maintain platform health: CI/CD, IaC, observability, on-call hygiene.
• Deliver enterprise deployments with multi-tenant isolation and data localization.
• Mentor engineers and guide hiring of the next generation of tech talent.

The role

You''''ll be at the forefront of solving some of the most complex engineering challenges we''''re tackling as a company, while leading a small, high-calibre engineering team of 5–6 people. You''''ll own engineering end-to-end, spanning architecture, execution, hiring, reliability, and delivery, working closely alongside the CEO and founding team to shape the company''''s technical direction.

This is a hands-on role. At our size, you'll spend a real share of your time writing code, reviewing PRs, and unblocking the hardest problems yourself.

What You'll Own

• Execution and delivery. Run planning, priorities, and status for engineering, and make the final call on technical decisions.
• Team Leader. Mentor and develop the existing engineering team, while helping hire the next generation of engineering talent and setting a high bar for technical excellence, quality, and ownership.
• AI systems. Own our agents, model routing, and eval harnesses. The hard constraints are citation correctness, latency, and LLM cost.
• Legal data and research. Build and run scraping pipelines for Indian courts and other legal sources, citation and authority graphs, structured statute conversion, and search indexing.
• Document pipelines. Keep OCR, chunking, embedding, and ingest reliable at scale.
• Enterprise delivery. Handle multi-tenant isolation, per-org storage and encryption, dedicated client clusters, security reviews, and data localization.
• Platform health. Own CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code, observability, and on-call hygiene, and make the system safer to change.

What We're Looking For

• 8+ years building and shipping production software, including time leading engineers or owning a significant system.
• Strong backend depth, ideally in Python, plus comfort working across a TypeScript frontend.
• Real experience putting LLMs into production: evals, retrieval, cost and latency tradeoffs, and handling model failure modes.
• Solid footing in cloud infrastructure: Kubernetes, Terraform or Terragrunt, and GitOps.
• A team leader managing the team along with the other senior engineers and our head of product.
• A builder''''s instinct. You''''d rather ship and measure than debate.
• Clear written communication, and the ability to make calls and explain them.
• Preferably less than 1 month of notice period

Nice to have

• Experience with search, information retrieval, or data-heavy pipelines.
• Experience with enterprise B2B: security reviews, compliance, and single-tenant deployments.
• Prior startup experience at seed or Series A.
