Job summary

John Crane, a business of Smiths Group, is seeking a Senior Data Scientist to lead the design and delivery of predictive diagnostics for industrial equipment.

You will own the data science roadmap, develop architectures, and contribute as hands-on software developer while guiding a cross-functional team across global sites. Proficiency in Python, ML, and ML Ops is required, and experience with industrial analytics is a plus.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 12 years of data science experience.
  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in CS/DS/OR/Math/Engineering/Physics or related field.
  • Proven experience leading challenging data science projects.

Responsibilities

  • Lead a team delivering novel projects with predictive diagnostics for industrial equipment.
  • Architect and design solutions using current tech stack and in-house platform.
  • Be hands-on software developer contributing to data science & ML pipelines.
  • Plan and execute the Data Science Roadmap with cross-functional teams.
  • Develop AI/ML applications and maintain analytics software platform (Python).
  • Establish MLops and robust data pipelines.

Job Description

Key accountabilities:

  • The data scientist will assume a role of significant leadership on a team that is responsible for planning, executing and delivering novel projects as John Crane incorporates advanced analytics and machine learning throughout our products and services, with a current emphasis on developing predictive diagnostics for industrial equipment.
  • The role brings the capabilities of solution architecture and design using latest tech stack and in house developed platform.
  • He/she applies extensive technical expertise and has full knowledge of other related disciplines. This role requires the data scientist to be a hands‑on software developer.

Key activities:

  • Work on a team designing innovative software and algorithms to solve real‑world problems in industrial processes. Use machine learning techniques, statistical tests, classical algorithms, and physically‑motivated models as appropriate
  • Perform in-depth exploratory analysis of data from the field and laboratory experiments
  • Acquire domain knowledge about mechanical systems to aid in interpretation, analysis, and model building. Display drive and curiosity to understand the business to its core
  • Develop applications according to requirements using a variety AI/ML and analytical techniques
  • Maintain and update the analytics software platform (Python)
  • Establish best practices around AI/ML production infrastructure, including building robust data pipelines and implementing MLops
  • Keep abreast of developments in the field
  • Collaborate with engineering and product development teams
  • Provide day‑to‑day guidance and technical leadership to the data science team: collaborate with team members on their work, perform code reviews with a view to ensuring robust software deployments and implementing best practices, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Align architectural designs with business priorities and justify technology choices.
  • Assist in the adoption of modern data architectures, event‑driven architectures, and real‑time analytics integration.
  • Maintain oversight of system reliability, scalability, and performance requirements.
Qualifications

Experience & Education:

  • Min 12Years
  • A bachelor’s or advanced degree in computer science, data science, operations research, applied mathematics, engineering, physics, or related field. Experience in more than one area is strongly preferred
  • Proven experience in leading challenging data science projects

Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of math, probability, statistics, and algorithms
  • Expertise with the Python data science ecosystem (pandas, scikit‑learn, PyTorch/Keras, etc.) and with common machine learning approaches (generalized linear models/regression, clustering, tree‑based methods, deep learning, etc.)

People Skills:

  • Must demonstrate the ability to work in diverse, cross‑functional teams in a dynamic business environment
  • Candidates must be curious, creative, self‑driven, and energetic self‑st
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
