Job summary

The Walt Disney Company is seeking a Software Engineer to join the compute team that maintains the data lake platform powering Disney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Star+. You will work with AWS, Databricks, and modern tooling to advance analytics, operations, and data science across our streaming services.

You will collaborate in a cross-functional environment, ensure quality software, and promote data-driven decisions.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience and a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field OR 3+ years with a master’s degree.
  • Experience deploying and running cloud-based applications (preferably AWS) and using infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
  • Proficiency in Python and ability to understand complex systems architecture.
  • Strong writing and verbal communication skills with customer-focused mindset.
  • Preferred: knowledge of data engineering with Spark, Snowflake, ETL concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Be part of a cross-functional team building software for large-scale data processing for analytics, data science, and operations.
  • Maintain software engineering and architecture best practices and promote quality, innovation, and experimentation.
  • Evolve the platform, drive adoption of features, and push data-driven decisions across teams.
  • Partner with multiple teams to architect solutions leveraging the Data Lake platform.

Job description

We are looking for a Software Engineer to help us grow the data platform. You will be embedded in the compute team that runs the data lake platform that helps power the analytics, operations, and data science behind our flagship streaming applicationsDisney+, Hulu, ESPN+, and Star+. You'll get to understand the challenges of how data is being used at Disney's world-class streaming services while pushing the boundaries of what is possible using the latest technologies available in AWS, Databricks, and beyond.

Responsibilities
  • Summarize job responsibilities, core deliverables, and major duties.
  • Focus on major areas of work, typically 20% or more of the role's % of time.
  • Be a key player in a cross-functional team of engineers who build software for a large-scale data processing ecosystem, supporting real-time and batch data pipelines for analytics, data science, and operations.
  • Maintain software engineering and architecture best practices and standards within the team and wider organization, along with a culture of quality, innovation, and experimentation.
  • Evangelize and evolve the platform, best practices, and data-driven decisions; identify new use cases and features and drive adoption.
  • Be a part of the magic (partner) for countless teams as they use the Data Lake platform, helping architect solutions for success.
Requirements
  • Minimum and Preferred. Inclusive of Licenses/Certs (include functional experience as well as behavioral attributes and/or leadership capabilities).
  • Experience deploying and running cloud-based applications (preferably AWS), utilizing infrastructure-as-code frameworks like Terraform.
  • Experience with Python.
  • Ability to dive deep into any technical component as well as understand the overall systems architecture.
  • You care deeply about craftsmanship in your software and can work backward from the customer experience.
  • You have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
