Job summary

Applied Systems India Pvt Ltd. is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to design, build, and optimize data solutions using BigQuery and Looker. You will work with a cross-functional team to model data across environments and locales, ensure data governance, and deploy via GitLab CI/CD.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
• 6-9 years of experience designing, building, and maintaining cloud-based data solutions.
• Proven experience with BigQuery and cloud-based data warehousing, multi-tenant designs.
• Advanced SQL and Python for scalable data solutions.
• Experience with Looker/LookML, BI tooling, and AI-enabled data workflows.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain BigQuery tables, views, functions, and stored procedures.
• Build scalable data models and data objects for reporting and analytics.
• Apply data modeling best practices for governance, quality, and performance.
• Own YAML-driven deployment manifests and multi-environment rollouts in GitLab CI/CD.

Position Overview

We're seeking a skilled Senior Data Engineer to build and enhance data solutions using BigQuery, with exposure to Looker and LookML being beneficia., while supporting data-driven and AI-enabled initiatives within the insurance domain. In this role, you will work closely with the Principal Data Architect, Data Scientists, and Software Engineers to design, build, model, and maintain data solutions. You will help optimize data architecture and improve accessibility of large-scale, multi-tenant datasets across environments (development, staging, production) and locales (US, Canada) for our global teams.

What You will Do

• Design, develop, and maintain BigQuery tables, views, functions, and stored procedures using BigQuery SQL and ANSI SQL.
• Design and implement scalable data models and data objects to support reporting, analytics, and business requirements.
• Apply data modeling best practices to ensure data quality, governance, performance, and usability across analytics and reporting solutions, including Looker where applicable.
• Own SQL deployment manifests (YAML-driven) and multi-environment/multi-locale rollout logic, ensuring safe and reliable deployments through GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and deliver solutions aligned with business objectives, security requirements, and data governance standards.
• Use Git for SQL, LookML, and YAML code management, reviews, and deployments.
• Contribute to AI-enabled initiatives that improve engineering productivity, data quality, automation, and development workflows.
• Identify and implement improvements across the full data lifecycle, from ingestion and transformation to reporting and analytics layers.
• Provide technical leadership through code reviews, design discussions, and mentoring of team members.
• Drive scalability, reliability, performance, and security improvements across data platforms.
• Lead complex initiatives and coordinate delivery across multiple stakeholders and teams.

What You will Need to Succeed

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 6-9 years of experience designing, building, and maintaining cloud-based data solutions.
• Proven experience with BigQuery and cloud-based data warehousing platforms, including large-scale multi-tenant schema design.
• Experience optimizing and managing BigQuery and Google Cloud Platform services.
• Advanced SQL and Python expertise with a demonstrated ability to design scalable and maintainable data solutions.
• Advanced analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to communicate with global team members to clarify requirements, confirm priorities, and deliver solutions within committed timelines.
• Good to have: Experience with Looker, LookML, or similar BI/reporting platforms.
• Experience leveraging AI-assisted engineering tools such as Claude AI, Copilot, or similar solutions to improve productivity, code quality, testing, and development workflows.
