The Specialist, Packet Network Engineering role leads technical direction for engineering, evolution and operational excellence of Colt's global Internet backbone, designing and integrating carrier-grade Internet and IP/MPLS infrastructure across multi-vendor environments.

Qualifications

• Extensive experience designing, implementing and operating large-scale Tier-1 Internet and IP/MPLS backbones.
• Strong knowledge of Internet routing architectures: Transit, IX Peering, CDN Interconnects, Cloud Connectivity.
• Expert in routing protocols IS-IS, OSPF, iBGP/eBGP and advanced routing policy frameworks.
• Excellent analytical, communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Design, test, implement and optimise large-scale Tier-1 Internet backbone infrastructure.
• Lead engineering activities for Internet backbone evolution, network integration and service migration.
• Design and optimise Internet Transit, IX Peering, Private Peering, CDN Interconnects, Cloud Connectivity and Internet Edge routing architectures.
• Develop scalable routing solutions using IS-IS, BGP, SR-MPLS/SRv6, MPLS and EVPN technologies.
• Engineer routing policies, traffic engineering strategies, capacity planning and backbone optimisation.
• Support carrier-grade network services including DDoS mitigation and DNS infrastructure.
• Develop automation, production validation and infrastructure-as-code solutions using modern automation frameworks.
• Produce High-Level Designs (HLD), Low-Level Designs (LLD) and operational documentation.

Why we need this role

The primary purpose of this role is to provide technical leadership for the engineering, evolution and operational excellence of Colt's global Internet backbone. The role is responsible for designing, integrating and optimising carrier-grade Internet and IP/MPLS infrastructure, supporting large-scale network transformation, backbone modernisation and service integration initiatives across a multi-vendor environment.

Working closely with Architecture, Operations, Automation and Product Engineering teams, the role will drive routing innovation, Internet connectivity, service resilience and operational efficiency, ensuring Colt continues to deliver highly available, scalable and secure network services to its global customers.

What you will do

• Design, test, implement and optimise large-scale Tier-1 Internet and IP/MPLS backbone infrastructure supporting global carrier and enterprise services.
• Lead engineering activities for Internet backbone evolution, network integration, operational handover, service migration and strategic infrastructure transformation programmes.
• Design and optimise Internet Transit, Internet Exchange (IX) Peering, Private Peering, CDN Interconnects, Cloud Connectivity and Internet Edge routing architectures.
• Develop scalable routing solutions using IS-IS, BGP, Segment Routing (SR-MPLS/SRv6), MPLS and EVPN technologies, ensuring high availability, fast convergence and operational resilience.
• Engineer routing policies, traffic engineering strategies, capacity planning and backbone optimisation to improve network performance and customer experience.
• Support carrier-grade network services including DDoS mitigation, DNS infrastructure, NetFlow/IPFIX visibility and network telemetry solutions.
• Develop and maintain engineering automation, production validation and infrastructure-as-code solutions using modern automation frameworks.
• Produce High-Level Designs (HLD), Low-Level Designs (LLD), engineering standards, migration plans, implementation procedures and operational documentation.
• Collaborate with cross-functional engineering, operations, security, product and vendor teams to deliver strategic network transformation initiatives.

What we're looking for

• Proven experience designing, implementing and operating large-scale Tier-1 Service Provider Internet and IP/MPLS backbone networks.
• Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Internet routing architectures, including Internet Transit, Tier-1/Tier-2 Peering, Internet Exchange (IX) Peering, CDN Interconnects, Cloud Connectivity, Internet Edge
• Routing, Routing Policy Engineering and Capacity Planning.
• Expert understanding of carrier-grade routing protocols including IS-IS (including Multi-Instance IS-IS), OSPF, iBGP/eBGP, Route Reflectors, BGP Communities, BGP-LU, BGP-LS and advanced routing policy frameworks.
• Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with Segment Routing technologies including SR-MPLS, SRv6, Prefix-SID, Adjacency-SID, TI-LFA, Remote LFA, Flex-Algo and Segment Routing Traffic Engineering.
• Proven experience designing, implementing and troubleshooting MPLS and EVPN services including L2VPN, L3VPN, EVPN-VPWS (Single-Homed and Multi-Homed) and EVPN-ELAN (Single-Homed and Multi-Homed).
• Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence technical decisions across cross-functional engineering teams.
