Job summary

Citi's Markets Technology group in Pune seeks a Software Python & Data Engineer to build high-throughput Python backend services and data pipelines for regulatory controls and market surveillance. You will work across trading, risk, and compliance teams to deliver automated, AI-enabled solutions and strong operational resilience.

Ideal candidates have 5+ years of backend Python, strong SQL skills, and experience with Jira/GitHub in Agile environments.

Job description

Citi's Markets Technology group is seeking a skilled Software Python & Data Engineer in Pune to help engineer high-throughput Regulatory Controls and Market Surveillance Platforms. In this hands‑on engineering role, you will design, code, and optimize scalable Python backend services and data pipelines that process large volumes of financial market data—including trade lifecycles, orders, executions, and risk analytics. Working at the intersection of software engineering and capital markets, you will collaborate with trading desks, risk managers, and compliance teams to deliver automated control frameworks and apply modern innovations—including Generative AI—to strengthen operational resilience and regulatory compliance across Citi's global markets footprint.

Responsibilities

• Design and implement high-throughput Python backend services and SQL pipelines to ingest and process large volumes of financial market data, under the guidance of senior technical leads.
• Translate regulatory mandates and market surveillance policies into reliable, deterministic control algorithms and automated surveillance components.
• Collaborate with trading desks, risk managers, and compliance stakeholders to support the modeling of trade lifecycles, order workflows and multi-asset risk analytics.
• Perform application profiling, database tuning, and SQL query optimization to reduce bottlenecks, minimize latency and improve throughput.
• Contribute to Generative AI-assisted solutions and automation patterns that reduce manual operational activities and streamline control testing workflows.
• Participate in architectural discussions, system design reviews and modern CI/CD practices using GitHub and Jira.
• Apply engineering best practices, take part in peer code reviews, follow testing standards and support knowledge sharing within the team.
• Ensure technical deliverables adhere to Citi engineering policies, enterprise security standards and regulatory compliance requirements.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with solid hands‑on experience building backend applications and data pipelines in Python.
• Strong proficiency in SQL, relational database design, query optimization, indexing strategies and database performance profiling.
• Working knowledge of Investment Banking and Capital Markets, including a good understanding of trade and transaction lifecycles, order management, execution workflows and market risk analytics.
• Demonstrated experience developing and supporting scalable systems handling sizable data volumes.
• Experience working within Agile frameworks, using Jira and GitHub for version control, branching strategies and collaborative development.
• Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities, with the ability to resolve complex technical issues and translate business requirements into technical specifications.
• Good communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with both technical teammates and business stakeholders.

Beneficial Skills & Qualifications

• Exposure to regulatory reporting or market surveillance platforms (e.g., MiFID II, CAT, Dodd‑Frank, MAR, Best Execution).
• Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift).
• Familiarity with distributed computing or data streaming technologies (e.g., Apache Spark, PySpark, Kafka, Solace, MQ).
• Exposure to Generative AI APIs, prompt engineering, or LLM‑driven tooling to automate workflows and extract structured insights from unstructured data.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree/University degree or equivalent professional experience; Master’s degree preferred.
