Job summary

Morningstar is seeking a hands-on Backend Software Engineer to join the Indexes Technology Team in Mumbai. You will build and maintain REST APIs, microservices, and data processing solutions that support Morningstar's index and mutual fund data platforms.

You will work within an Agile environment with Python-focused stack (FastAPI, Pandas, NumPy, pytest) and Java Spring Boot applications, on AWS with PostgreSQL, Kafka, Docker, and modern practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
• 3 to 5 years of backend software development experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop backend applications and REST APIs using Python (FastAPI/Flask).
• Contribute to enterprise-grade apps built with Java Spring Boot.
• Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices with clean, scalable code.
• Create and maintain unit and integration tests using pytest and JUnit.
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, stand-ups, and Agile ceremonies.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve issues across the stack.
• Collaborate with leads, analysts, QA, and stakeholders to deliver high-quality solutions.
• Learn and adopt modern tools and AI-assisted development practices.

The Morningstar Indexes Team leverages its expertise in equity research, manager research, asset allocation, and portfolio construction to create innovative investment solutions. Using Morningstar's proprietary intellectual property, the team develops indexes that help investors achieve their goals throughout the investment process, including market monitoring, benchmarking, and asset allocation.

The Role

The Indexes Technology Team is seeking a hands-on Backend Software Engineer with strong Python expertise and working knowledge of Java. In this role, you will build and maintain REST APIs, microservices, and data processing solutions that support Morningstar's index and mutual fund data platforms.

You will work within an Agile environment alongside experienced engineers who will support your professional and technical growth. The technology stack is Python-focused, utilizing FastAPI, Pandas, NumPy, and pytest, while also supporting established Java Spring Boot applications. The platform operates on AWS and leverages PostgreSQL, Kafka, Docker, and modern engineering practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop backend applications and REST APIs using Python (FastAPI/Flask).
• Contribute to enterprise-grade applications built with Java Spring Boot.
• Design, build, and maintain RESTful APIs and microservices with clean, scalable, and well-tested code.
• Create and maintain unit and integration tests using pytest and JUnit.
• Participate in code reviews, sprint planning, stand-ups, retrospectives, and other Agile ceremonies.
• Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve application and production issues across the technology stack.
• Collaborate closely with team leads, business analysts, quality assurance teams, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality software solutions.
• Learn and adopt modern software development tools and engineering best practices, including AI-assisted development technologies.

Required Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related discipline.

Experience

• 3 to 5 years of experience in backend software development.

Technical Skills

Python (Primary Skill)

• Strong proficiency in Python 3.x.
• Experience with FastAPI and/or Flask frameworks.
• Hands-on experience building REST APIs and microservices.
• Experience using Pandas and NumPy for data processing and analysis.
• Understanding of multiprocessing and multithreading concepts.
• Strong knowledge of exception handling, data structures, and algorithms.
• Experience with pytest for automated testing.
• Familiarity with dependency management tools such as Poetry or uv.

Java (Secondary Skill)

• Experience with Java 17+ (Java 21 preferred).
• Hands-on experience with Spring Boot and Spring MVC.
• Familiarity with Maven or Gradle build tools.
• Experience writing tests with JUnit.

Software Engineering Fundamentals

• Strong understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP).
• Knowledge of design patterns and SOLID principles.
• Experience with Git version control.
• Strong debugging and troubleshooting capabilities.
• Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
• Passion for learning and adopting new technologies.

Good to Have

• AWS services such as S3, Lambda, ECS, and RDS.
• PostgreSQL and SQL database experience.
• Docker and basic Kubernetes knowledge.
• Apache Kafka or other messaging and streaming technologies.
• CI/CD tools such as GitHub Actions or Jenkins.
• Experience using GitHub Copilot or other AI coding assistants.
• Exposure to AI/LLM applications and automation tools.
• Redis.

Experience Level

Mid-Level Software Engineer (3-5 Years Experience)

This role is designed for experienced software engineers who can independently develop backend services and APIs while continuing to expand their expertise under the guidance of senior engineers.
