Job summary

Duck Creek is seeking a Software Engineer I to design, code, and configure solutions for moderate complexity Agile stories, while writing automated tests. You will validate AI-generated outputs for correctness and security, and contribute to CI/CD pipelines and Terraform-based infrastructure for Azure deployments.

The role requires 6+ years in software development, 2+ years in product/domain experience, and strong OO design with Java or .NET.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Information Sciences, or related field.
• Total Work Experience: 6+ years (software development); 4 years minimum.
• Product Experience: 2 years minimum, 4+ years preferred.
• Domain Experience: 2 years minimum, 4+ years preferred.
• Expert in object-oriented design, Java or .NET development, relational OLTP queries, and relational database design.
• Capable of XML/XSLT document design, JavaScript/TypeScript development, HTML5 & CSS.
• Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure fundamentals (Azure preferred).
• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes; CI/CD pipelines; automated testing frameworks.
• Expert in Duck Creek Policy, Billing, Claims, Engagement (AP), or Data Insights.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools (GitHub Copilot, Claude Code).
• Ability to estimate, analyze, and execute the Software Product Development Lifecycle with Agile methodology.
• Understands Insurance domain knowledge.

Position Overview

The Software Engineer I is responsible to design, code, and/or configure solutions for moderate complexity Agile stories, as well as writing automated unit and integration-level tests.

Responsibilities

• Designs, codes, and/or configures solutions for moderate complexity Agile stories with some guidance from a senior software engineer, using AI-assisted development tools to accelerate implementation while critically validating all AI-generated output for correctness, security, and maintainability.
• Debugs and resolves moderate complexity software bugs or issues, working independently to find the real root cause and provide a fix without collateral damage - applying systematic debugging practices rather than trial-and-error, including when using AI tooling to assist investigation.
• Writes automated unit and integration-level tests under own direction, including end-to-end test coverage using modern test automation frameworks.
• Contributes to Infrastructure-as-Code (e.g., Terraform) and CI/CD pipeline definitions for cloud-based (Azure) deployments as part of feature delivery.
• May create or support the creation of a conceptual design/architecture for small-scale software solutions with guidance from an architect or more senior developer.
• May provide guidance and mentoring to more junior software engineers, including on the effective and responsible use of AI-assisted development tools.
• Follows development standards and effectively demonstrates technical solutions to other software engineers in code reviews - including reviewing AI-assisted contributions with the same rigor as hand-written code.
• Assists in making source code management decisions for one or more teams.
• Performs source code management tasks (Git-based workflows, branching, PR hygiene) without specific guidance required from other team members.
• Performs other related duties and activities as required.

Education and Work Experience

• Bachelor's degree, or higher education level, or its foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Computer Information Sciences, and/or related field

• Expert in object-oriented design, Java or .NET development, relational OLTP queries, and relational database design.

• Working knowledge of cloud infrastructure fundamentals (Azure preferred) and Infrastructure-as-Code tooling such as Terraform.
• Familiarity with containerization and orchestration concepts (Docker, Kubernetes) as used in modern deployment pipelines.
• Experience with CI/CD pipelines (Azure DevOps or equivalent) and automated testing frameworks (e.g., Playwright, Pester, or similar).
• Expert in Duck Creek Policy, Billing, Claims, Engagement (AP), or Data Insights.
• Practical experience using AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Claude Code) as part of the daily development workflow, paired with sound judgment on when to trust, verify, or override AI suggestions.
• Ability to manage deadlines, communicate in a team, and operate independently with guidance.
• Understands how to estimate, analyze, and execute the Software Product Development Lifecycle with Agile methodology.
• Understands Insurance domain knowledge.
