Itron Resiliency Solutions is seeking a Principal Engineer to serve as the technical anchor for the Emergency Preparedness Response team. You will be a backend‑heavy full‑stack engineer who understands our systems deeply, reason about trade‑offs rigorously, and raise the engineering bar while leading toward outcomes that matter for storm response and workforce mobilization.

The Emergency Preparedness Response (EPR) team builds the systems that keep critical operations running when it matters most. When storms and severe weather threaten communities and infrastructure across the US, our platform enables customers to rapidly procure, mobilize, and manage the workforce needed to respond to and recover from storm damage - often under tight timelines and high-stakes conditions. We are looking for a Principal Engineer who is deeply hands‑on, works backward from customer pain points and business needs, and measures success by impact rather than lines of code shipped. You will be the technical anchor of the team: a backend-heavy full‑stack engineer who knows our systems inside and out, reasons rigorously about trade‑offs, and raises the engineering bar for everyone around you while leading the team toward outcomes that genuinely matter.

What youll own in your first year

• Design. Write design notes for your features and get them reviewed; contribute to larger designs led by senior engineers.

• Customers. Understand who uses what you build, and learn from support issues what to fix next.
• Code reviews. Give and receive thoughtful reviews, and help onboard engineers who join after you.

What you must bring

• Experience: 1-4 years building production software. We level on demonstrated scope, not years alone.
• Youve shipped code that runs in production. Features or services you built, released and supported - not only coursework or prototypes.
• You are strong at problem solving. You can take an unfamiliar, feature-sized problem, reason through it, and land on a simple, correct solution.
• You work independently toward a clear goal. Given a clear goal, you figure out the steps, unblock yourself, and ask for help at the right moments.

We care how you engineer more than which language you did it in.

Technical background

Youve built production software with a modern stack, such as:

• Cloud: hands‑on with AWS - youve deployed and debugged services running on it.
• Languages: strong in at least one modern language such as Python, Java or JavaScript/TypeScript.
• Frameworks: modern service frameworks such as FastAPI, Node.js or equivalents.
• Databases: solid data modeling and query fundamentals - you can design a schema, use indexes well, and explain why a query is slow and how youd fix it.
• Fundamentals: data structures, API design, and the basics of caching and concurrency.

Exact tools matter less than depth. Strong experience on an equivalent stack is welcome.
