Job summary

Expedia Group is seeking a skilled Software Engineer to help build a modern shared checkout platform powering multiple brands like Hotels.com and Vrbo. You’ll work across frontend and backend to deliver secure, scalable experiences, using Java, React, and TypeScript.

You’ll contribute to distributed microservices, design APIs, and improve customer journeys with AI-enabled tooling, while leveraging AWS and Kotlin where appropriate.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a technical field.
• 2+ years of relevant professional experience.
• Hands-on experience with Java and React, including TypeScript.
• Experience building or supporting microservices and distributed systems, with AWS or comparable cloud platform experience.
• Willingness to own full-stack features and work with Kotlin.

Modern Checkout is pioneering the future of frictionless travel commerce by developing a brand and product line agnostic checkout platform for Expedia Brands including Hotels.com and Vrbo. The Checkout Engineering organization enables one of the most critical steps in a traveler’s journey. Once a user selects their ideal trip, it is Checkout team job to make their booking smooth, highly secure, and effortless. By decoupling the transaction layer from individual brand architectures and specific travel products (flights, hotels, car rentals), Modern Checkout delivers a unified, highly adaptable payment experience. This strategic evolution simplifies the path to purchase, accelerates global scaling, and empowers Expedia to deploy seamless, hyper-localized checkout flows across its entire portfolio with unprecedented agility.

In this role, you will:

• Build and evolve frontend and backend capabilities for a modern, shared checkout platform serving multiple Expedia Group brands and travel products.
• Develop production-quality services and user experiences using Java, React, TypeScript, and related web technologies, flexing across frontend or backend delivery as business needs require.
• Design, build, test, debug, and maintain distributed microservices and frontend applications with a focus on reliability, scalability, and high-quality customer experiences.
• Apply system design, low-level design, API design, and data modeling practices to deliver maintainable full-stack solutions.
• Work with cloud-based systems, including AWS or comparable platforms, and contribute to services developed in Kotlin where required.
• Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve outcomes, using AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows responsibly to improve engineering productivity and quality.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or Equivalent related professional experience.
• 2+ years of relevant professional experience.
• Hands-on experience with Java and React, including TypeScript within the React ecosystem.
• Experience building or supporting microservices and distributed systems, with AWS or comparable cloud-platform experience.
• Ability to own assigned full-stack features through development, testing, debugging, and delivery, with willingness to work with Kotlin.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Production experience developing services with Kotlin, including Kotlin-based services that use GraphQL.
• Experience with Spring Boot, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, API design, and data modeling for full-stack applications.
• Experience designing scalable, reliable systems and contributing to system design decisions for customer-facing platforms.
• Strong testing, debugging, and operational problem-solving skills across frontend and backend services.
• Familiarity with AI-driven systems, tools, or workflows and applying AI/ML concepts to real world products, including sound judgment in reviewing and validating AI-generated output.
