What’s the role

The Engineer – Digital & Drawing Management (SPI Administrator) role is part of Shell’s SEAM (Safety, Environment & Asset Management) organization under Technical Asset Support (TAS), which provides centralized technical expertise to support global assets remotely. The position plays a key role in maintaining the quality, accuracy, and integrity of instrumentation engineering data, supporting Shell’s asset management, reliability, and digital transformation objectives. By managing SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) databases and associated engineering documentation, the role helps ensure that critical asset information is accessible, standardized, and aligned with business and operational requirements. From a technical perspective, the role combines instrumentation engineering knowledge with digital data management expertise. Responsibilities include administering and maintaining SPI databases, managing instrument specifications, loop diagrams, and wiring records, as well as ensuring data synchronization across systems such as GSAP, AVEVA AIM-A, SQL, and Digital Twin platforms. The position works closely with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams to support safe and reliable plant performance, making it well suited for candidates with a background in Instrumentation & Control Engineering, oil and gas operations, process industries, and engineering information management.

What you’ll be doing
  • SPI System Administration & Database Management Lead the setup, configuration, and deployment of new SPI project databases using the SPI Admin tool. Manage SPI database merging, claiming, and transitions into production within site‑specific SLAs. Maintain SPI templates, tables, libraries, and Shell‑specific specification forms. Perform routine database cleanup, quality checks, and resolve discrepancies between SPI, SAP, AIM‑A, and Digital Twin. Manage SPI user accounts, roles, permissions, and access controls. Ensure robust QA/QC processes and support a “First Time Right” quality culture.
  • Instrumentation Engineering Support Understand maintenance and operational requirements for field instruments, analyzers, PLC/DCS systems, and other control assets. Maintain instrument indexes, update specifications, and manage JB schedules, loop diagrams, and wiring details. Troubleshoot end‑to‑end instrument wiring and provide virtual technical solutions. Ensure accurate and updated As‑Built data in SPI. Coordinate with EPCs and site teams for data reviews, updates, and technical clarifications.
  • Project & Maintenance Support Review, validate, and incorporate SPI project deliverables from EPCs into the live database. Initiate and configure SPI databases for new capital and brownfield projects. Analyze technical documents, engineering data, and maintenance procedures to ensure SPI data accuracy. Support site teams with troubleshooting and SPI functionality training. Facilitate cross‑functional collaboration across Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance.
  • Technical & Wiring Troubleshooting Support Provide support for end‑to‑end loop verification, wiring diagnostics, and virtual troubleshooting for field engineers and EPCs.
  • Develop Power BI dashboards Using SQL queries and build Power BI dashboards to extract, analyze, and visualize SPI‑related data for reporting and decision‑making.
  • Review & Integration of Project Deliverables Validate EPC submissions, integrate project and plant changes, and ensure document control alignment throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Compliance, Safety & Documentation Ensure adherence to Shell design standards, engineering practices, and HSSE requirements. Participate in Risk Assessments (RA) for instrumentation data changes. Maintain complete documentation, audit trails, and accurate SPI modification records. Ensure data completeness to support plant reliability and availability.
  • SME Leadership & Knowledge Transfer Act as SPI Subject Matter Expert, mentor peers, and contribute to building discipline capability. Maintain strong connections with Shell engineering best‑practice networks.
  • Reporting & Continuous Improvement Generate standard and ad hoc SPI reports for engineering, maintenance, and operations. Identify process improvement opportunities and support automation and tool enhancement initiatives. Drive continuous improvement in data workflows between SPI and other plant information systems.
