Job summary

Gen Re in Mumbai is seeking a Senior Underwriter for its Asia Life/Health unit. You will contribute to development and profitability, handling medical and financial underwriting and claims assessments, and engage in underwriting development and knowledge initiatives.

You will guide clients and internal teams, share underwriting expertise, mentor junior underwriters, and participate in regional and international projects to strengthen standards and growth.

Qualifications

• 16+ years of relevant experience in life insurance or reinsurance.
• Proven capability in underwriting across medical, financial and disability products is desirable.
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.

Responsibilities

• Underwrite medical, financial and special risks within delegated authority limits.
• Provide technical underwriting support to clients, internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams.

Your Role

Our Asia Life/Health unit is looking for an energetic and dynamic Senior Underwriter to join our Mumbai office. You are a member of the Life/Health team contributing to the development and profitability of our business in Asia. You have medical and financial underwriting and claims assessment responsibilities and will be involved in underwriting development and research, product development and knowledge enhancement initiatives.

Your Key Responsibilities

• Assess and underwrite medical, financial and special risks within delegated authority limits, ensuring timely and consistent underwriting decisions
• Provide technical underwriting expertise and support to clients, internal stakeholders and cross-functional teams
• Build and maintain strong client relationships, offering practical solutions, training and guidance on underwriting matters
• Contribute to the development and enhancement of underwriting standards, guidelines, standards, frameworks and best practices
• Support claims assessment and approval within delegated authority limits
• Monitor market trends, medical advancements, regulatory developments and emerging risks to identify opportunities for innovation and business growth
• Collaborate with actuarial, claims and business development teams on product development, and strategic projects
• Identify client training needs and support the development and delivery of underwriting training programmes
• Coach and mentor junior underwriters, promoting technical excellence and knowledge sharing
• Participate in regional and international initiatives and projects

Your Profile

• At least 16 years of relevant prior work experience in a life insurance or reinsurance company with good knowledge of Indian markets
• Professional life insurance or life underwriting qualifications are desirable
• Sound medical knowledge and exposure to life, disability and health insurance products would be an advantage
• Proven ability to build and maintain effective client and stakeholder relationships
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Good command of English, both written and spoken
• Able to work independently as well as a strong team player
• Ability to travel for business as and when required
