Programmers.io is seeking a highly experienced Senior SQL Server & PostgreSQL DBA to manage on‑premise and multi‑cloud database platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). The role focuses on SQL Server with strong PostgreSQL hands‑on, plus exposure to cloud‑native DB services.

Qualifications

• 5+ years of SQL Server DBA experience in production environments.
• 3+ years hands-on PostgreSQL administration.
• Experience with HA/DR, backups, restores and disaster recovery.
• Experience with Azure SQL, AWS RDS or other managed DB services.
• Exposure to MySQL or MariaDB and cloud-native DBs.
• Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and scripting skills.

Responsibilities

• Manage end-to-end SQL Server DBA operations across dev, test and prod.
• Install, configure, patch, and maintain database environments.
• Lead performance tuning including plans, indexing, and queries.
• Implement and support HA/DR solutions (Always On, replication, clustering).
• Oversee backup, restore, and periodic DR validations.
• Troubleshoot production issues and resolve bottlenecks.
• Administer databases on Azure SQL, RDS and other cloud services.
• Coordinate cross‑db operations for PostgreSQL and cloud DBs.
• Support migrations to cloud and modernization initiatives.

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior SQL Server & Postgres DBA to manage and support enterprise database platforms across on-premise and multi-cloud environments (AWS, Azure, GCP). The role is primarily centered around Microsoft SQL Server, while also requiring strong hands‑on experience in PostgreSQL and exposure to modern cloud‑native database services.

The ideal candidate should operate as a cross‑skilled senior DBA, capable of working across multiple database technologies, supporting both SQL Server and PostgreSQL environments in production, and contributing to cloud‑native database operations. The role demands strong ownership of critical systems, along with the ability to adapt to evolving database platforms across relational and non‑relational ecosystems.

Key Responsibilities

1. SQL Server Administration & Production Operations

• Manage end-to-end SQL Server DBA operations across development, test, and production environments


• Perform installation, configuration, upgrades, patching, and environment maintenance


• Lead performance tuning efforts including execution plan analysis, indexing strategies, and query optimization


• Implement and support HA/DR solutions such as Always On Availability Groups, replication, clustering, and log shipping


• Manage backup, restore, and disaster recovery with periodic DR validations


• Troubleshoot production issues including blocking, deadlocks, IO bottlenecks, and performance degradation

2. Multi-Cloud & Managed Database Operations

• Administration of databases on Azure SQL, Managed Instances, AWS RDS, and relevant GCP managed database services


• Support high availability, scaling, failover, and backup strategies across cloud environments


• Monitor database performance, availability, and capacity across cloud deployments


• Work on hybrid database connectivity across on‑prem and cloud environments

3. Cross‑Skilled Database Operations (SQL + PostgreSQL + Cloud DBs)

• Hands‑on support and administration of PostgreSQL databases across environments


• Work with PostgreSQL in both self‑managed and cloud‑managed platforms (RDS / Azure PostgreSQL / Aurora PostgreSQL)


• Exposure to MySQL / MariaDB environments and ability to support operational activities


• Familiarity with cloud‑native databases such as Aurora, Cosmos DB, DynamoDB, Cassandra or equivalent platforms


• Ability to work across relational and non‑relational database technologies as part of modern data platforms

4. Database Migration & Modernization Support

• Support on‑prem to cloud database migrations across SQL Server and PostgreSQL platforms


• Participate in database re‑platforming and modernization initiatives


• Assist in cross‑database migration scenarios (SQL Server ? PostgreSQL / others)


• Ensure data consistency, performance stability, and minimal downtime during migrations

5. Production Support & Reliability

• Own day‑to‑day production database operations for mission‑critical systems


• Monitor database health, performance trends, and capacity utilization


• Participate in incident management, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis (RCA)


• Maintain runbooks, SOPs, and operational documentation

Required Skills & Experience

• 5+ years of strong SQL Server DBA experience


• Min 3+ years of hands‑on working experience with PostgreSQL


• Proven expertise in performance tuning, HA/DR, and production system management


• Min 5+ years of hands‑on experience with Azure SQL, AWS RDS, or other managed database platforms


• Exposure to MySQL / MariaDB and modern cloud‑native databases


• Strong troubleshooting, performance tuning, and scripting skills.

Automation & DevOps Alignment

• Support automation of database provisioning, monitoring, and maintenance tasks


• Work with DevOps teams to integrate database operations within CI/CD pipelines


• Use scripting (PowerShell, Python) for operational efficiency


• Contribute to improving DBA processes through automation and standardization
