Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus 8+ years of experience or MS in Computer Science plus 6+ years of hands-on experience in building large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience architecting, designing and developing large-scale distributed software systems, storage and database and providing critical support.
• Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, distributed systems, consensus algorithms, design patterns, and storage and network solutions.
• Deep expertise in database internals: storage/buffer managers, WAL, MVCC, lock managers, query planners/executors, and database engines.

Responsibilities

Job Summary

Our NuData team at eBay brings together like-minded engineers who are pushing boundaries to build the next-generation database platforms for eBay. We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer that builds and runs petabyte-scale data platforms that power large-scale database infrastructure. This position will have the opportunity to architect, build and operate the next generation distributed database platform that powers some of the most critical systems powering eBay's global ecommerce business. You will be responsible for scaling eBay's core data infrastructure by working closely with other engineers, customers, business partners, and product managers.

What you will accomplish

• Take end-to-end ownership of core distributed components: drive architectural decisions, implement core database internals (e.g., storage engines, consensus protocols), optimize for high concurrency, and ensure system reliability through rigorous testing, observability, and production-level debugging.
• As a self-motivated and enthusiastic technical engineer, you will collaborate with extremely inquisitive and proficient peers, leading and designing data infrastructure using your strong background in distributed systems, storage and large-scale database systems working with the latest open-source technologies where relevant
• You will work in an agile environment with a focus on problem solving and engineering precision. As a technical leader you are expected to assess technology problems, design optimal solutions and drive implementation to meet the business expectations
• As a senior engineer, you will guide juniors in your team and also across other cloud teams in building scalable, high speed, distributed systems and advocate for meeting the design and quality standards
• Work with a team of passionate engineers from concept to completion of a feature or a prototype/proof of concept or benchmark, going from brainstorming sessions to converging on a design and ultimately building features and deploying them to production and supporting them
• Design and implement differentiated features in a fast-pace environment with focus on scalability, performance, geo distribution, and availability and with steadfast focus on quality and automation, employing AI tools wherever possible

What you will bring

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science plus 8+ years of experience or MS in Computer Science plus 6+ years of hands-on experience in building large-scale distributed systems

Core Technical Skills

• Key skills: C++, Java, Python, Scala, JavaScript or any other Programming language. Solid understanding of OOP/OOD, distributed systems, cloud-related knowledge, distributed cloud databases, Hadoop, Kubernetes.
• Experience in architecting, designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, distributed software systems, storage and database and providing critical support
• Excellent understanding of computer science fundamentals, data structures and algorithms, distributed systems, consensus algorithms, design patterns, and storage and network solutions.
• Deep expertise in database internals: storage/buffer managers, write-ahead logging (WAL), multi-version concurrency control (MVCC), lock managers, query planners/executors, and database engines.
• Strong transaction management background: isolation levels, concurrency control, deadlock detection, crash recovery, physical/logical replication, and HA/failover strategies
• Exceptional problem solving abilities will be critical for success, as will be a focus on quality. The successful candidate will have a noticeable impact on the product and is expected to participate in the design and development of a feature / benchmark / prototype / proof of concept, ranging from architecture through testing and production rollout and ongoing support of the systems in production
• Extensive hands-on experience and expertise in Object-Oriented Design, Distributed Programming, and various database systems (NoSQL and relational) at scale
• Deep understanding of distributed systems failure modes, including network partitioning, consensus algorithms (Raft/Paxos), consistency models, and strategies for maintaining Always-Available performance under high-concurrency loads.

Leadership Collaboration

• Drive architecture discussions, produce well-documented design docs, and participate in design and code reviews
• Ensure code quality and maintainability by evolving architecture and tech stack, refactoring, standards and improving build and test systems
• Working experience in a cloud environment (Docker/K8S)

Cross-Geo Collaboration

• Ability to thrive in a global engineering environment, effectively managing asynchronous communication and participating in cross-time-zone synchronization for critical production support and design reviews with teams in the US, Dublin, and China.
