PayPal's engineering team in India seeks a Senior Backend Software Engineer. You will design, develop, and optimize core payment systems powering millions of daily transactions, working with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable solutions.

You will mentor junior engineers, participate in code reviews, and help raise the bar for performance and security in a balanced hybrid model with 3 in-office days and 2 remote days, in the Chennai region.

Essential Responsibilities

• Delivers complete solutions spanning all phases of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) (design, implementation, testing, delivery and operations), based on definitions from more senior roles.
• Advises immediate management on project-level issues
• Guides junior engineers
• Operates with little day-to-day supervision, making technical decisions based on knowledge of internal conventions and industry best practices
• Applies knowledge of technical best practices in making decisions

Minimum Qualifications

• 3+ years relevant experience and a Bachelor’s degree OR Any equivalent combination of education and experience.

What Do You Need To Bring

• 5 + years of backend development experience and a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field.
• Proficiency in at least one backend language (Java, Python, Ruby on Rails)
• Advanced proficiency in backend development with either Java EE frameworks, including experience with Spring MVC, or Hibernate.
• Experience designing and implementing RESTful services, focusing on scalability and reliability, using Java.
• Proven ability to mentor junior engineers and contribute to code reviews and design discussions.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure)
• Experience with databases (SQL, NoSQL)
• Strong understanding of database design, including SQL and NoSQL databases, and experience with ORM tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with large-scale, high-performance systems.
• Knowledge of the payment processing industry and relevant regulations.
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Contributions to open-source projects.
