Job description

Job Description:

Senior Risk Manager, Finance Operations Risk, Governance & Experience (FORGE)
Why This Role Matters

Every day, Amazon processes millions of financial transactions that power our global operations—from paying vendors and suppliers to managing complex payment flows across dozens of countries. Behind that scale is a finance engine that must be fast, accurate, and resilient. The FORGE team exists to ensure it stays that way.

As a Senior Risk Manager on the FORGE team, you won't just find problems—you'll architect solutions. You will lead high-impact audits and risk programs across Finance Operations (FinOps), with a primary focus on Accounts Payable and Payments. Your work will directly strengthen the control environment that safeguards billions of dollars in financial flows, protect Amazon from material risk, and drive the kind of operational excellence that lets Finance scale with confidence.

This isn't a role where you wait for direction. You'll operate in spaces where the problem isn't fully defined, where control gaps span multiple systems and teams, and where the right answer requires deep investigation, cross-functional influence, and the courage to challenge the status quo. If you thrive on turning complexity into clarity—and ambiguity into action—this role was built for you.

What You'll Own & Drive
  • Lead end-to-end audits and risk assessments — Own the full lifecycle from scoping and planning through fieldwork, reporting, and remediation tracking across FinOps processes, with primary accountability for Accounts Payable and Payments.
  • Manage complex, cross-functional risk programs — Take ownership of programs that tackle significant, multi-dimensional business problems where control gaps, root causes, and solutions are not yet fully defined. Define the path forward and drive execution.
  • Identify and close control gaps — Assess the design and operating effectiveness of existing controls. Pinpoint vulnerabilities, quantify risk exposure, and drive practical remediation plans that produce measurable, lasting improvements.
  • Define success and measure outcomes — Establish clear project objectives, success criteria, and risk reduction metrics. Build mechanisms to monitor progress, validate effectiveness, and ensure improvements don't erode over time.
  • Influence across the organization — Partner with FinOps leaders, business teams, technology owners, and other cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize risk work, navigate competing demands, align on trade-offs, and drive crisp, timely decisions.
  • Communicate with impact — Prepare clear, compelling audit reports, executive narratives, and leadership-ready communications. Present findings, recommendations, and risk trade-offs to senior leaders (Director and above) with precision and confidence.
  • Build and test mechanisms — Design, roll out, monitor, and test controls and audit mechanisms that ensure risks remain within acceptable tolerance levels—not just today, but as processes and systems evolve.
  • Think long-term — Provide strategic perspective on risk-related business and technology decisions. Help stakeholders see around corners, prioritize the right mitigation investments, and avoid building risk into new processes.
  • Drive systemic improvement — Influence process owners to implement scalable controls, simplify workflows, eliminate recurring sources of risk, and reduce operational friction that leads to errors or inefficiencies.
  • Raise the bar for the team — Mentor fellow risk managers, contribute to the broader risk management community through best-practice sharing, coaching, and thought leadership. Leave the team stronger than you found it.
  • Stay ready for the unexpected — Support ad hoc inspections, deep dives, and reviews across broader FinOps and upstream business processes as new risks emerge or business needs evolve.
Who You Are
  • You are deeply analytical—you instinctively look for the data behind the story, and you don't accept surface-level explanations when something doesn't add up.
  • You exercise strong judgment under ambiguity—comfortable making decisions and recommendations even when information is incomplete.
  • You influence without authority—earning trust across teams, levels, and functions through the quality of your thinking and the clarity of your communication.
  • You balance strategic vision with tactical grit—equally comfortable setting a 12-month risk program roadmap and rolling up your sleeves to trace a transaction through five systems.
  • You are a builder—not content to just identify problems, you design mechanisms, processes, and frameworks that prevent recurrence at scale.
  • You write with clarity and communicate with confidence—distilling complex, technical findings into narratives that drive action at the leadership level.
  • You thrive in fast-paced, high-ownership environments where the work is meaningful, the standards are high, and the impact is real.
Key job responsibilities
  • Lead the scoping, planning, and execution of complex audits and risk assessments across FinOps processes, with primary ownership of Accounts Payable and Payments.
  • Own the end-to-end lifecycle of high-impact, cross-functional risk programs, addressing complex business problems, emerging risks, and evolving risk strategies.
  • Identify control gaps & process vulnerabilities, evaluate control effectiveness, and drive practical, sustainable remediation plans that strengthen risk management and controllership.
  • Define project objectives, success criteria, risk reduction metrics, and governance mechanisms; monitor outcomes to ensure improvements are measurable, scalable, and sustained.
  • Partner with FinOps, business, technology, and cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize risk initiatives, navigate trade-offs, influence decisions and drive timely execution.
  • Develop clear, data-driven audit reports, risk narratives and executive communications ""?? well copy.
  • Lead the design, implementation, monitoring, and testing of controls and audit mechanisms to ensure risks remain within defined tolerance levels and control expectations.
  • Provide a strategic, long-term perspective on business and technology risks, helping leaders prioritize mitigation strategies, control investments, and process improvements.
  • Influence process owners and senior stakeholders to implement scalable and automated controls, simplify workflows, and eliminate recurring sources of operational and financial risk.
  • Identify opportunities to leverage data, automation, and technology to improve risk detection, strengthen controls, and enhance the efficiency of audit and controllership mechanisms.
  • Support ad hoc audits, inspections, risk reviews, and deep dives across broader FinOps and upstream processes as business priorities and risk landscapes evolve.
Basic Qualifications
  • 7+ years of compliance, audit or risk management experience
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent
  • 7+ years of risk management, audit, legal, compliance or related field work including engaging with external stakeholders experience
  • Experience in auditing, risk management, compliance, program management, or quality management systems
  • Experience in risk management and internal audit including: performing risk assessments and audits, designing controls, managing enterprise control frameworks, and prioritizing risk
  • Experience in program or project management including the delivery of cross-functional projects
  • Experience analyzing data to make business decisions
  • Experience in a finance role including partnering with a variety of stakeholders across the business, or experience communicating complex information and solutions to senior stakeholders and influencing decisions
  • Experience with documenting accounting conclusions, or experience communicating complex information and solutions to senior stakeholders and influencing decisions
  • Experience with audit or risk program design, control environment process documentation, and control mapping
  • Experience working in a fast-paced and ambiguous environment

  • Experience working with Finance Operations processes, preferably Accounts Payable, Payments, Procure-to-Pay (P2P), or other financial transaction processes.

  • Experience dealing well with ambiguity, prioritizing needs, and delivering measurable results in an agile environment
  • Experience managing multiple projects and priorities across teams in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Experience communicating and presenting to senior leadership
