Senior Python API Developer (5-8 Years Experience)

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Python API Developer to lead the design, development, and delivery of secure, scalable, and high-performance backend applications and RESTful APIs. The ideal candidate will bring deep expertise in Push (Webhook/Event-driven) and Pull (Request/Response) API integrations, strong database design judgment, and the ability to set technical direction across a team. This role carries end-to-end ownership of backend architecture decisions, from integration patterns through production performance, and expects fluency with modern AI-assisted development tools as a core part of the engineering workflow.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the design, development, and delivery of RESTful APIs and backend services using Python.
• Architect Push (Webhook/Event-driven) and Pull (Request/Response) API integration patterns for high-volume, mission-critical systems.
• Own the design of secure, scalable, and high-performance backend services, setting standards for the wider team.
• Architect and optimize PostgreSQL or MongoDB schemas, including indexing strategy and query performance at scale.
• Write and review efficient SQL and MongoDB queries, and troubleshoot complex performance bottlenecks.
• Define and enforce API security standards JWT, OAuth2, API Key management, and secure-by-design practices.
• Own API documentation and contracts using Swagger/OpenAPI, and guide external and internal integration partners.
• Lead root-cause diagnosis and resolution of production API and database performance issues.
• Mentor junior and mid-level developers, lead code reviews, and drive engineering best practices across the team.
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders product, QA, DevOps to translate business requirements into robust technical solutions.
• Champion and govern the responsible use of AI tools for coding, debugging, testing, and documentation, ensuring AI-generated code meets security and quality standards.

Required Skills

• Strong, proven Python programming skills with a track record of building production-grade systems.
• Deep hands-on expertise with FastAPI, Flask, or Django REST Framework.
• Advanced REST API design and integration experience, including high-scale or high-availability systems.
• Strong command of PostgreSQL or MongoDB, including schema design, indexing, and performance tuning.
• Solid grasp of JSON, XML, HTTP/HTTPS, and REST architectural principles.
• Proficiency with Git and standard branching/release workflows.
• Strong command of API security OAuth2, JWT, SSL/TLS, API Keys and secure coding practices.
• Experience building robust logging, exception handling, and application monitoring into production systems.
• Demonstrated experience using GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, or similar AI-powered development tools in a professional workflow.
• Ability to write effective prompts, critically validate AI-generated code, and apply AI responsibly and securely.
• Prior experience as a technical lead, mentor, or owner of a significant feature area or service.

Preferred Skills

• Docker for containerized deployments.
• RabbitMQ, Kafka, or similar message brokers for event-driven architectures.
• CI/CD pipeline design and ownership.
• Microservices architecture and service decomposition experience.
• Experience defining or improving AI-assisted development workflows and AI-enabled IDE adoption for a team.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
• 5-8 years of hands-on Python backend development experience, including at least 1-2 years in a senior or lead capacity.
• Relevant certifications are an advantage.

Good to Have

• Experience leading third-party API or enterprise application integration projects.
• Exposure to AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform.
• Track record of driving API and database performance optimization initiatives.
• Agile/Scrum experience, including sprint planning and technical estimation.
• Passion for adopting emerging AI technologies to improve engineering efficiency and software quality.
