Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a Senior Principal Enterprise Software Engineer to lead architectural direction for complex medical device software. You will drive scalable, secure solutions and provide technical leadership across globally distributed teams, blending hands-on engineering with system-level design in a regulated medical device environment.

You will guide embedded, mobile, client/server, web, and cloud interfaces, contribute to strategy, and mentor engineers while collaborating with product

Qualifications

• Requires 20+ years of software engineering experience with a Bachelor's in Computer Science Engineering or 17+ years with a Master's in Computer Science Engineering.
• Experience in software architecture, design, development, debugging, and testing using C# and .NET.
• Experience architecting and building AI assisted and AI native tools with measurable productivity impact.
• Experience developing medical device software, including real-time data acquisition, processing, synchronization, or presentation.
• Experience designing embedded and connected software including firmware or device drivers, Bluetooth, networking services, socket communication, TCP/UDP.

Responsibilities

• Provide architectural and technical leadership across software products and platforms, aligning designs with system and enterprise architecture.
• Define system-level software requirements and architectures with traceability and quality.
• Lead design, development, and verification of high-integrity software for Class II and III medical device systems.
• Architect software for real-time data acquisition, processing, synchronization, and presentation across implantable devices and connected systems.
• Design and guide development of embedded, mobile, client/server, web, and cloud interfaces (Bluetooth, TCP/UDP, sockets, REST/SOAP).
• Promote reusable software frameworks, OO design, automation, and test-first practices.
• Evaluate technologies and practices while guiding cross-team improvements.
• Mentor engineers and collaborate with product owners, architects, and partners.

A Day in the Life

The Senior Principal Enterprise Software Engineer provides architectural and technical leadership for complex medical device software products and platforms. This role defines software architecture, drives the development and verification of scalable and secure solutions, and provides technical direction across globally distributed engineering teams. The position combines hands‑on engineering with system‑level design leadership across embedded, mobile, enterprise, and connected software while supporting development in a regulated medical device environment.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide architectural and technical leadership across software products and platforms, aligning product designs with system and enterprise architecture.
• Define system‑level software requirements and architectures, review design artifacts, and ensure requirements traceability, technical quality, scalability, security, and maintainability.
• Lead the design, development, and verification of high‑integrity software for Class II and Class III medical device systems.
• Architect software for real‑time data acquisition, processing, synchronization, and presentation across implantable devices and connected systems.
• Design and guide development of embedded, mobile, client/server, web, and cloud interfaces, including Bluetooth, Transmission Control Protocol/User Datagram Protocol (TCP/UDP), socket communication, and REST and SOAP services.
• Develop and promote reusable software frameworks, object‑oriented design patterns, automation approaches, and test‑first engineering practices.
• Evaluate technologies, frameworks, engineering tools, and development practices while leading technical and process improvements across teams.
• Influence technical strategy and product roadmaps while mentoring engineers and collaborating with product owners, architects, technical leads, verification and validation engineers, and global research and development partners.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science Engineering and 20+ years of software engineering experience OR Master's degree in Computer Science Engineering and 17+ years of software engineering experience.
• Experience in software architecture, design, development, debugging, and testing using C# and .NET.
• Experience architecting and building AI assisted and AI native tools and solutions with demonstrable efficiency and productivity impact.
• Experience developing medical device software, including real‑time data acquisition, processing, synchronization, or presentation.
• Experience designing embedded and connected software, including firmware or device drivers, Bluetooth communication, networking services, socket communication, and TCP/UDP communication.
• Experience translating system requirements into subsystem requirements and software designs using Unified Modeling Language (UML), requirements traceability, and object‑oriented design principles.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience developing Class III medical device systems, implantable device software, device simulators, or mobile operating system applications for regulated medical systems.
• Knowledge of IEC 62304, ISO 13485, medical device cybersecurity, patient privacy, and secure software development practices.
• Experience with Agile methodologies, Test‑Driven Development (TDD), automated software testing, and configuration management tools.
• Experience with operating system threading and scheduling, distributed computing, relational database design, web‑based applications, and build systems.
• Experience working with cross‑functional and geographically distributed teams, including software development, verification and validation, systems engineering, human factors, and quality engineering.
