Athenahealth, Inc. is seeking an experienced Senior Member of Technical Staff – Automation Engineer in Chennai, India, on a hybrid basis.

You will design, build, and maintain end-to-end test automation for UI, API, and backend layers, and create AI agents using Claude and Codex to improve testing efficiency and reliability. Position Summary:

Build automation systems that help athenahealth deliver reliable, high-quality software at scale. The Senior Member of Technical Staff – Automation Engineer will design, build, and maintain end-to-end test automation covering UI, API, and backend layers, and will build custom AI agents and skills using Claude and Codex to solve testing problems such as automated test generation, failure triage, and self-healing test maintenance. This role is based in Chennai, India and follows a hybrid work model. The person in this role will collaborate with engineers, QA partners, and other stakeholders to deliver maintainable, scalable automation solutions using modern software development and AI-assisted testing practices. This position reports to the Senior Engineering Manager, Quality.

About the Team:

Our Collector QA team is building new and evolving test automation capabilities for athenahealth customers. We work on solving complex quality and reliability problems for a broad set of stakeholders, including customers, internal technology-enabled services teams, and multiple BPO vendors. Much of this work involves designing and implementing automated test coverage that validates large volumes of claim resolution workflows, with a focus on improving reliability, coverage, and release confidence.

These systems support quality validation that may be performed manually by QA partners or automated to improve overall test coverage and productivity. That means our team builds automation that exercises UI flows, validates API contracts, verifies backend data integrity, and creates a more efficient and reliable testing experience across revenue cycle operations. The engineering work often involves balancing test stability, coverage, maintainability, and evolving business needs across distributed systems.

As a Senior Member of Technical Staff, this role contributes directly to the development of automated test frameworks, API and backend automation, and Claude/Codex-based testing agents that power these workflows. Success in this role requires solid test automation engineering fundamentals, experience working with service-based systems, and the ability to collaborate effectively across functions. The team values clear communication, practical problem solving, and thoughtful engineering that improves quality outcomes for customers and internal users.

• Build and maintain scalable API automation suites (REST/GraphQL) and backend automation that integrate with internal platforms and dependent systems.
• Design, build, and maintain custom AI agents and skills using Claude and Codex to solve testing problems such as automated test generation, test data creation, failure triage, and self-healing test maintenance.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to translate quality requirements into automated test coverage.
• Create and enhance automated test suites and CI/CD test integrations that support high-volume transactional workflows.
• Troubleshoot automation and pipeline issues, identify root causes of flaky tests and failing API contracts, and deliver fixes that improve suite stability.
• Contribute to code reviews, test reviews, and team engineering practices that improve automation quality and consistency.
• Optimize test execution performance and pipeline throughput to support scalability and operational efficiency.
• Use AI tools, where appropriate, to improve productivity in day-to-day automation work, such as generating test cases, triaging failures, summarizing technical information, or exploring implementation options, while reviewing outputs carefully before applying them.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

• Document automation frameworks, implementation details, and test coverage for shared understanding across the team.
• Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and estimation activities for automation-focused work.
• Support deployment, release validation, and post-release monitoring of automated test coverage for assigned services or features.
• Assist in improving CI/CD workflows and test automation practices across the team.
• Contribute to test reporting and observability improvements that help detect and resolve automation and production issues.
• Partner with adjacent teams to align on API contracts, integration points, and shared test dependencies.
• Share technical knowledge through walkthroughs, documentation, and collaborative problem-solving sessions on Playwright automation and Claude/Codex testing agents.
• Identify opportunities to simplify workflows or reduce manual testing effort through automation enhancements and AI-assisted agents.

Expected Education & Experience:

• 5 to 9 years of software engineering experience in test automation, backend development, or related application development work.
• Experience developing or supporting API automation (REST/GraphQL) and backend/service-based test automation.
• Experience building agents and skills with Claude and Codex to solve testing problems, such as automated test generation, triage, and self-healing tests.
• Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, version control, and cloud application deployment concepts (AWS or Azure).
• Understanding of software engineering fundamentals, including object-oriented design, testing, debugging, and version control.
• Experience working in Agile or iterative development environments with cross-functional teams.
• Ability to analyze technical issues, communicate clearly, and contribute practical solutions.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
