Job summary

Mott MacDonald invites a Senior Highways Engineer to join our highways team. You will lead design delivery across major projects, overseeing drainage, road design and 3D modeling, while ensuring regulatory compliance and high-quality outputs.

The role focuses on mentoring teams and integrating new digital delivery tools. You will work with clients such as national and local highways authorities, applying Safety by Design and best practice in a global consultancy.

Qualifications

• Experience in Health, Safety and Welfare, Safety by Design.
• Minimum 8+ years in drainage and road design.
• Ability to deliver high-quality design models, drawings, calculations, reports and specs.
• Strong understanding of DMRB and Local Highway Authority standards.

We are seeking a Senior Highways Engineer to join our team and take a role in the delivery of highway and drainage projects. Candidate should have good knowledge of highway design, active travel scheme design, highway drainage design, and should be able to apply the latest technology available in the market. The scale of our projects ranges from small and bespoke design commissions through to some of the most significant infrastructure projects within the UK and worldwide.

Responsibilities:

• Complete assigned tasks in accordance with quality, timescales, and budgeted hours.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives to develop design solutions that meet client requirements and regulatory standards.
• Comply with industry standards and safety regulations.
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with Mott MacDonald's quality standard procedures.
• Provide technical mentoring to the team and others for the key service areas provided by the Highways team.
• Provide leadership with knowledge management and digital delivery initiatives for the team.
• Provide supervision and mentoring, identifying opportunities for professional development and progression along with specific line management responsibilities for designated direct reports.
• Foster a culture of right first-time delivery and work with Project Managers/Principals to ensure effective project delivery.
• Work with the Senior discipline staff to proactively manage workloads and effective forecasting and ensure maximum utilisation of team members, allocate appropriate staff to projects or bids as agreed.
• Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of industry standards, regulations, and new technologies.

Candidate Specification:

Qualification:

Degree qualified in civil engineering (BE/B. Tech./ME/M. Tech.).

Essential skills and experience:

• Experience and a commitment to effective management of Health, Safety and Welfare, Safety by Design.
• Minimum 8+years working experience in drainage and road design.
• Ability to deliver high quality design models, drawings, calculations, reports, and specifications.
• An excellent understanding of relevant standards (e.g. the DMRB and Local Highway Authority standards).
• Experience of managing project teams and technical leadership.
• Experience in drafting bid proposals, raising an early warning notice, and to ensure delivery within time and cost constraints.
• Experience of working with clients, such as National Highways, Network Rail, and Local Highways Authorities.
• Ability to communicate confidently and professionally with all levels of staff and clients (written and verbal)
• Technical competence insurface and foul water drainage designand able to independently deliver work and integrate with larger project team with minimal supervision from senior staff.
• Preparation of concept and detailed design of 2D and 3Dcar park layout design, and private street design.
• A thorough understanding and experience of using 3-dimensional highway design software such as Civil3d, and Info-drainage.
• Good experience in utilities coordination and working with contractors.
• Should be able to conduct independent technical checks.
• General IT software skills, such as, Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and ProjectWise.

Chartered Engineer (ICE or CIHT) will be an added advantage.

You need to able to build and maintain strong relationships with both your colleagues and external clients through excellent verbal and written communication skills.
