What You’ll Do
The Senior Engineer, Power and Controls is responsible for the model-based development and system-level validation of control solutions for grid-connected power systems and power-electronic products across Eaton’s power, energy, and digital portfolio. This role involves developing power-system, power-electronics, plant, and control models to support controls development, grid-interconnection studies, grid-code compliance, and product validation. The engineer will work as an individual contributor and collaborate with controls, systems, hardware, firmware, software, and validation teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform grid-interconnection and grid-code compliance studies under normal, disturbed, fault, and weak-grid conditions for DERs, Large Electronic Loads and other Grid connected systems.
- Develop power-system, power-electronics, plant, and control models using MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and DIgSILENT PowerFactory.
- Model converter power stages and controls for UPS, SST, AFE, DER, BESS, and microgrid applications.
- Apply Model-Based Design for controls development and system-level validation.
- Support real-time testing using OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, or equivalent platforms.
- Translate product and grid-code requirements into simulation scenarios, test cases, and acceptance criteria.
- Validate and document models using simulation, HiL, laboratory, and product test results.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and participate in technical design and model reviews.
Qualifications
- Three to five years of relevant experience in power-system modelling, power-electronics modelling, controls development, Model-Based Design, grid-interconnection studies, or real-time simulation.
- M.Tech./M.E. in Power Systems, Power Electronics
- B.Tech./B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
- Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD, and/or DIgSILENT PowerFactory for grid-interconnection studies covering ride-through, dynamic performance, power quality, converter-grid interaction, and large-load behaviour.
- Basic experience with OPAL-RT, Typhoon HIL, or an equivalent real-time simulation platform.
- Strong understanding of power-system fundamentals, Distributed Energy resources, Microgrids, Grid following and Grid forming control modes, Grid interconnection standards like IEEE 1547, EN50549, ERCOT and other regional grid codes
- Good understanding of the working principles of UPS systems, Solid-State Transformers, Active Front End converters, DER systems, Battery Energy Storage Systems, and microgrids.
- Good understanding of the primary and secondary controls of power-electronic converters used in UPS, SST, DER, energy-storage, and grid-connected inverter applications.
- Understanding of isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters, two-level and three-level inverters, bidirectional converters, and their control requirements.
- Ability to develop control and power-stage or plant models for system-level studies, grid-interconnection assessments, and grid-code compliance verification for both MiL and HiL validation.
Skills
- Own moderately complex modelling, controls, and validation work packages.
- Execute day-to-day technical activities with limited supervision.
- Develop accurate, reusable, configurable, and well-documented models.
- Apply strong engineering judgment to select suitable model fidelity for each study.
- Identify modelling assumptions, limitations, numerical issues, and validation gaps.
- Communicate technical findings clearly through reports, simulation results, and design reviews.
- Collaborate effectively across controls, systems, hardware, firmware, software, and validation teams.
- Progress toward technical leadership in power-system modelling, power-electronic controls, Model-Based Design, and grid-interconnection studies.
