Job summary

Grid is seeking a Senior Database Administrator in Bengaluru to own the PostgreSQL lifecycle, including installation, configuration, and zero-downtime migrations from MariaDB/MySQL to PostgreSQL.

The role emphasizes high availability, replication, PITR, and automation. You will work across customer data centers and cloud environments, optimizing performance and ensuring security and reliability.

Qualifications

• Proven experience migrating schemas, queries, and data from MariaDB/MySQL to PostgreSQL.
• Deep understanding of HA architectures, backup strategies, PITR, and replication topologies.

Responsibilities

• Administer, support, and maintain PostgreSQL-based enterprise databases.

Job description

We are looking for a Senior Database Administrator with expert-level command of PostgreSQL. In this role, you will take full ownership of the database lifecycle, from installation, configuration, and zero/low-downtime database migrations (e. g., from MariaDB/MySQL to PostgreSQL) in diverse environments (customer data centers and cloud) to setting up high availability (HA), replication, automation, and disaster recovery strategies.

Responsibilities:

• Core Database Administration: Administer, support, and maintain enterprise database systems with a primary focus on PostgreSQL.
• Database Migration: Plan and execute database migrations, schema conversions, and data transformations from legacy database systems (such as MariaDB/MySQL) to PostgreSQL with minimal downtime.
• Deployment and High Availability: Lead the installation, configuration, and provisioning of database clusters across cloud and customer data centers (on-premises), ensuring high availability (HA) and automated failover.
• Replication and DR: Design and implement robust strategies for physical/logical replication, backup, and point-in-time recovery (PITR) to ensure business continuity.
• Performance Tuning: Proactively monitor database health and availability using Prometheus and Grafana. Perform query optimization, indexing, connection pooling (e. g., PgBouncer), and resource configuration for low latency and high throughput.
• Analytical and Secondary Data Stores: Support and manage analytical/OLAP workloads (e. g., ClickHouse) and caching/NoSQL systems (e. g., Redis) as needed.
• Automation: Automate routine database administration tasks, migration scripts, installation workflows, and configuration management using scripting (Bash/Python) and automation tools.
• Security: Implement and maintain database security controls, including hardening, role-based access management (RBAC), auditing, and encryption standards.
• Collaboration and Documentation: Work closely with development, infrastructure, and platform teams to improve reliability, scalability, and schema design while maintaining comprehensive technical documentation.

Requirements:

• Experience: 5-8 years of hands-on experience in database administration.
• PostgreSQL Expertise: Expert-level knowledge of PostgreSQL architecture, internals, physical/logical replication, connection pooling (e. g., PgBouncer), and performance tuning is mandatory.
• Database Migration: Proven experience migrating schemas, queries, and live data from other relational database engines (e. g., MariaDB/MySQL) to PostgreSQL.
• High Availability and Replication: Deep understanding of HA architectures (e. g., Patroni, pg_auto_failover), backup strategies (pgBackRest, WAL archiving), point-in-time recovery (PITR), and replication topologies.
• Infrastructure and Deployment: Proven experience installing and configuring databases in hybrid environments (customer DCs and cloud).
• Observability: Proficiency with monitoring tools, specifically Prometheus and Grafana.

Nice To Have:

• MariaDB / MySQL Expertise: Solid hands-on experience administering, replicating, and tuning MariaDB or MySQL databases.
• Redis and NoSQL: Working knowledge of Redis (for caching and persistence) and general exposure to NoSQL databases.
• Analytical Databases and Workloads (OLAP): Experience administering columnar or analytical databases (e. g., ClickHouse, Druid, Snowflake, Vertica). Hands-on ClickHouse experience (cluster operations, sharding) is a major bonus.
• IaC Tools: Familiarity with Ansible, Terraform, or Chef for configuration management.
• Automation: Strong scripting skills in Bash and/or Python for automating installation, migration, and maintenance tasks.
