AgileEngine in India is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to build robust backend features for payment flows and reduce technical debt across Java services.

You will collaborate with product managers and partner teams, write well-tested code, and ensure CI/CD pipelines pass, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and maintainability.

Competenze

• 4+ years of backend software engineering experience.
• Production-grade backend services at scale.
• Strong Java proficiency; Kotlin and Python are plus.
• Hands-on with RESTful and GraphQL APIs, microservices, and event-driven systems.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build backend features for payment flows and reduce technical debt across Java services.

The mandatory requirements are 4+ years of backend engineering experience, payments, fintech, or billing domain experience, Kotlin, Python, and an upper-intermediate English level.

What you will do

• Implement new backend features for payment flows.
• Drive technical-debt reduction, including refactoring legacy services, improving test coverage, and modernizing APIs (e.g., deprecated API migrations).
• Write clean, well-tested, production-ready code that meets Indeed's engineering standards and merges to main with passing CI/CD pipelines and peer-review approval.
• Deliver against multiple initiatives within agreed sprint cycles. Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and sprint ceremonies alongside full-time Payments engineers.
• Collaborate with product managers, partner teams, and fellow engineers to clarify requirements and deliver end-to-end solutions.
• Produce documentation for owned workstreams — designs, API specs, KT docs, and runbooks — to support long-term maintainability.
• Ensure a smooth hand-off to the full-time engineering team at the conclusion of the engagement.

Must haves

• 4+ years of backend software engineering.
• Building and operating production backend services at scale.
• Strong proficiency in Java as the primary programming language, with Kotlin and Python as complementary skills.
• Hands-on experience with RESTful and GraphQL APIs, microservices, and event-driven systems.
• Payments, fintech, or billing domain experience, including gateways, processors, or PSPs.
• Writing unit, integration, and contract tests.
• Ramps quickly on an existing codebase with minimal guidance.
• Git-based version control and code review (GitLab).
• GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
• Relational databases (MySQL) and SQL.
• Jira for task and sprint tracking.
• Built end-to-end backend payment flows (charge, refund, dispute, webhooks) in production.
• Experience in legacy service refactoring/migration with regression testing.
• Experience resolving production incidents in payment or billing systems.
• Experience designing internal APIs consumed by multiple downstream services.

• Experience in a large enterprise engineering org.
